Synth nerds?

Recommended Posts

any synth nerds here?

I'm looking for a hardware (or good software) synth. Not interested in making lead lines, just really REALLY scary basslines to terrify neighbours and raise the dead. Using the Novation BassStation VST at the moment and loving it, but am thinking of getting hardware.

Also, excuse my stupidity, but i was looking at the novation synth, and it came up with a whole lot of "rackmount" ones, with no keys. Shouldn't synths have keys?

Peace out

Not necessarily. Most studios just use rackmount versions of synths and samplers and control the sounds and effects through the use of MIDI controllers and or software applications. Quite a few major synths are rackmount but also have their key'ed cousins, which usually run the consumer a lot more money.

If you like the novation stuff have a look at the X-Station, it's a good price and a pretty powerful synth, definately recommended...

On the other hand, if you got cash get a Virus Ti then give it to me...

There's plenty of other stuff out there, but Novation is extremely extremely extremely good quality for money and the Virus is just plain nasty. Also, check out ebay and the sellers section on the Sound On Sound website for bargins (there's currenly a novation bass station for £50 but I reckon that's probably been sold).

Hardware:

Waldorf Pulse - modern mono synth, ALL analogue oscillators and filter and comprehensive yet easy mod matrix. Fat as fuck and has a random mode for all out craziness.

Korg Microkorg - modern classic with lots of presets divided by music genre and really simple interface - it was designed with live performance in mind. Built in vocoder for those Stevie moments and massive sound. cheap as chips as well.

Software :

M-Audio/G-Media ImpOscar - if you want dirty bass this is your man. filthy recreation of a weird classic.

M-Audio/G-Media Minimonsta - Its a MiniMoog. A polyphonic MiniMoog. With ohmboyz effects built in. Sounds kickass, but very well, 'Moogy'. Not that thats so bad cos they sound wicked.

Native Instruments Absynth 3 - Much more sophisticated than the previous two, thus capable of very complex pads atmosphers etc as well as bass and lead sounds.

yo, I'm looking at getting some keys too, I want at least 4 octaves worth of keys, and a pitch bend wheel, and not too much $$, but I want something that's quality that I can produce with, not have to upgrade soon... I don't want just midi either, I want some ish I can bring around to play

Depends what your budget is mate

The classic synth for big bad bass is the Access Virus, but it is quite expensive

The MicroKorg or MS2000 might be worth investigating

In terms of VST's i'd look at Albino, Z3ta+, Moog Modular. Personally i've never come across one soft-synth that has been able to make tearing bass sounds right out of the box but once you sample the synth and give it some distortion and effects then any of those synths are worth looking into
