  1. Some people don't like how serato/traktor feel for scratching, so will always want clean aahhs on vinyl for cutting etc. I'd personally rather press my own custom skipless record then buy most battles records now though. Doesn't that cost an arm and a leg though? I looked at doing something similar (years and years ago now) and it was expensive (too rich for my blood anyway). Also the places I talked to seemed utterly uninterested in issues like bowed pressing, sloppy holes etc. I've been working on stuff for a battle/scratch record to release on CD for a bit and I think you pretty much have to stick aah and fressh on there, though of course with a dvs they only have to be on there once or twice and not taking up a fucking quarter of the record. Just out of interest, how many people would take a punt on a cd scratch record if it was say 5-10 quid and had 70 minutes or so of content?
  2. Mapping an fc1010 (or any controller) to ableton is the easiest thing in the world? Using guitar pedals is a really expensive way of adding effects to your set ??
  3. Turn it down to where you can just hear it. Then turn it down a wee bit more.
  4. D-styles on Rhymes like a Scientist - I find it very hard to appreciate anything newer/funkier than this, I'm particularly wary of the new wave of brit stuff that seems to cross 4/4 with the 2-step - how hopelessly out of touch am I and is there any place for boombippers any more? Downloaded the DV collab mix and didn't like really any of the tunes (cuts were iller than anything than I could do though) - am I just too old and shit ?
  5. Hardware: Waldorf Pulse - modern mono synth, ALL analogue oscillators and filter and comprehensive yet easy mod matrix. Fat as fuck and has a random mode for all out craziness. Korg Microkorg - modern classic with lots of presets divided by music genre and really simple interface - it was designed with live performance in mind. Built in vocoder for those Stevie moments and massive sound. cheap as chips as well. http://www.vintagesynth.com/ Software : M-Audio/G-Media ImpOscar - if you want dirty bass this is your man. filthy recreation of a weird classic. http://www.maudio.co.uk/products/en_gb/GFo...OSCar-main.html M-Audio/G-Media Minimonsta - Its a MiniMoog. A polyphonic MiniMoog. With ohmboyz effects built in. Sounds kickass, but very well, 'Moogy'. Not that thats so bad cos they sound wicked. http://www.maudio.co.uk/products/en_gb/GFo...onsta-main.html Native Instruments Absynth 3 - Much more sophisticated than the previous two, thus capable of very complex pads atmosphers etc as well as bass and lead sounds. www.nativeinstruments.com
  6. You might be able to snag a Behringer FCB1010 off ebay for around that price. I say might. I wouldn't usually recommend behringer gear but these are solid and I know several people who use them. Setting MIDI controllers up in Live is the easiest thing ever. Just press the 'MIDI' button in the top left of the screen. Shit will turn blue. Click on the thing you want to control, then hit your footswitch/turn your knob etc. Congratulations! Your switch/controller is set!
  7. What steelio said, I think you even get a version of live with the trigger finger. Live is far and away the best program out there at the moment for guys primarily using samples as the basis for their tunes.
  8. Roland UK have no due date at the moment. Like most things announced at the NAMM show, it'll be available around summer time (probably).
  9. |Rawkus always seemed to be quite keen on acapellas and instumentals back in the, so ther should be some good kweli/mos def/other bloke knocking about at least.
  10. learn flares and chirps first.
  11. Most standard computers will be fine running audio apps - unless you plan to go all out with lots of virtual instruments and high end plugins you really don't need to worry too much. This being the forum that it is, I'm assuming that the majority of your work will be multitracking stuff from your tables in which case even a decidedly average (like steves) computer will be adequate. A couple of words of warning though - avoid audigy/soundblaster cards like the fucking plague - even though they may be marketed as 'studio' cards they certainly are not and will give you shitty performance. You don't need to go overboard - RME and MOTU stuff is great, they'll give you no trouble whatsoever, in fact that's mostly why they are so popular amongst the semi-pro market - they just fucking work no matter what you throw at them. if you're looking to record guitars as well as line level sources (your mixes) and mics - check out m-audio cards (some of which have been qualified to run pro-tools) or just buy an mbox for £269 which is a bloody good bargain by anyone's standards.
  12. I think I have my answer - practice more you bitch. I'm still going to buy a vestax tho.
  13. mixer -----------------------> the window. bastard still works. the three sticker thing confused the goddamn hell out of me. Only thing i truly understood was the DIY vid where q SHOWS you...I'm kinda thick like that Something else I forgot to mention is I've not had anyone to cut with for about three years - I think I've just got tired of buggering about on me own and listening to my own boring-ass patterns and stuff, its got to a stage where i'm really thinking about just giving up and selling the whole lot as I do need the money and can't see any improvement coming on the horizon at all.
  14. Do whatever the fuck you want with the instrument or tool you have. Whether the general public regocnise your tool as an instrument is irrelevant. Whether you make 'beautiful' music that the critics enjoy or hard, earthy shit that people go nuts to , its all equally valid. Don't get too hung up on using just turntables though, as this can really limit your horizons if you do. Me, I like both kinds but I'm not too worried by critics(not they're likely to hear any of my stuff) and love to see people go wild.
  15. I'm on the verge of taking a hammer to my 360... I only really have myself to blame....I've been out of practice for some time, and with various other factors like video games and semi-alcoholism taking their toll my will to cut is almost fucking zero right now. Yes, I'm shit and its my fault - but goddamn it, why can't I nail the fucking bastard flare scratch? This shit eludes me like some bastard dandelion fluff in high winds - I can do it in the slow, retarded sense, but any attempt to build up speed and my hands just start spazzing out. I can get a shite approximation of a fast 1 click flare by moving my hands really quickly and hoping for the best, but it invariably sounds cack. I can't even do it regularly and slowly properly - it's a 50/50 sound normal/sound shit situation. The whole cut in the middle thing just doesn't seem to agree with my brain - like there's no way to unlearn what I've learned from the old days of stabs....I should mention that im RIGHT HANDED but cut with my left on the record, and have to REVERSE HANDS for faster clean chirps (think crossed arms). I'm beginning to wonder if a heavier fader might help me as the HAK one just doesn't seem to be working for me - its fucking fantastic at letting me do ultra fast crabs, but seemingly nothing else...chirps and other fast scratches seem to get lost in its lightness. I went from a shitty stanton SA5 to a HAK360 without knowing the mechanics of any of the open fader scratches and I think that playing catch up on this mixer now is fucking me up, or at least not helping. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Has anyone moved from a light fader to a heavier one and had better results? Should I just get a Vestax anyway ?
  16. At least he kept his frogmouth shut during the recent london show....then went down on his knees unplugging all q's gear whilst the crowd stormed the bar when it was over....
  17. Shame on you, Dee! I hear Freedom Force vs the third reich is quite fresh gameplay wise, and very pretty to look at. I've lost a lot of free time recently to ww2online - a massive sim with not exactly cutting edge graphics, but depth, variety, and teamwork in spades - in fact if you don't play as a team you're pretty much fucked (though that's not to say you can't dip in for 1/2 an hours casual german spanking). It's a 24/7 online campaign so it doesn't have that linear 'wear out' factor that a lot of games (particularly the current glut of fpses) have. It's £8 a month but I used to buy a game or two most months not so long ago and i've never got the experience from them that I get from this. A major overhaul both graphically and in the user interface/player structure is imminent, so if you're looking for something with a bit more depth give it a look when 1.19 is released (in about 2-3 weeks I think).
  18. Actually rygon, this has solved the problem!!! Thankyou man on internet!!!!!
  19. The film you are thinking of is Strange Days with Ralph Fiennes & Angela Bassett. I don't think it's based on Neuromancer or any other Gibson novel, however it's been awhile and I only read 2 of them so I could be wrong....
  20. ta for the input, but i suspect i kinda need the proxy connection in order to access t'internet in the first place.
  21. I need your help lads! (particularly any professional server admins ) with the recent departure of our general manager I've been elevated to admin status at work (besides doing tech support, requisitioning, CAD, PR, customer service, returns processing and a smattering of sales) but I find myself confronted by our arseing proxy server. Before he left, previous admin was installing stuff on my pc and noticed I was logged on to b3ta and the SA forums. Now, prior to this I could go ANYWHERE on the net I pleased, including but not limited to: www.somethingawful.com www.cumguzzlingfreaks.com www.bumrapeisland.co.uk (recommended for anyone who ever read a commando comic and/or defaced a school textbook) Now I'm getting 403's on so many f**king sites it's not funny - i even had a page refused from dolby.com today which was genuinely concerned with work - lord knows how the technical specs on dolby digital are classed as 'racial or sexual' material. I need to know how to defeat this - my networky type knowledge stuff is limited - I have an admin password, access to the proxy server, but don't know what I should really be looking for. I've already tried changing my ip and giving my regular login name admin status but to no avail.....any ideas?
  22. something to do with nlite, perhaps ?
  23. I'm firmly in the skinny/pasty contingent. And I don't always look like a moody cunt.
  24. Liam speaks the truth. That article is pure ass. UFO enthusiasts should check this link out; far more plausible and compelling: http://www.disclosureproject.org/
