What firewall/antivirus software are you running?

I'm running Sygate Pro firewall (version 5.5 build 2673) and Kaspersky antivirus (version 5.0.121). After trying a few different programs, these are the best I've found. Kaspersky used to be pretty poor but they've really pulled their fingers out now and it's shit hot. I have it running constantly with no slow down at all. I made the switch from NOD32 based on some independent testing I was reading that came out with these scores................

1) Kaspersky 21

2) eXtendia AVK 19

2) F-Secure 19

2) BitDefender 19

3) MKS_Vir 18

3) CommandAV 18

3) F-Prot 18

4) GData Avk 17

5) Virus Buster 15

5) Panda 15

6) DrWeb 14

6) ETrust 14

6) Avast Pro 14

6) AVG Pro 14

7) KingSoft 13

7) NOD32 13

8) McAfee 12

8) Norton 12

8) Trend 12

The scores were based on 6 categories - Support, Definition Response, Stability, Resources/Performance, Aesthetics and Detection Power. Each was scored out of 5. The main thing for me was definition response and how fast updates appear to deal with new viruses. Kaspersky scored 4/5 on this as well as 4/5 for detection rates - the highest of any of the ones on test. It also supports the ASPack2000 packer format. About 40% of all new trojans are being spread using that format and Kaspersky is the only AV software that currently supports scanning of those files.

Yeah it's worth a look - especially if you are running Norton as that hogs resources like a mofo. Most of the antivirus tests done by independent labs are getting pointless now............

Every product tested passes the ICSA Labs tests. These tests are only done on existing viruses though. The ability to update fast and use heuritic scanning to catch possible new threats is something that should be considered definitely.

the router will act as a firewall

i dont use any virus protection

That's just dumb though - especially as you work in IT. How do you know that an exe file you downloaded off Kazaa isn't infected? Even if you only use the on demand element of an av program you should use one. I've downloaded a few files off using Kazaa Lite and they have been infected. Usually it is the keygen, but occasionally the actual main exe file has a worm in it.

It scores a 3 while NOD32 scores a 4. You can lower the settings for on demand scanning though to "high speed" and it flies. The only difference is it doesn't scan outgoing email or archives. Obviously you can can use the on demand element for archives like zips etc. I think it would be worth you giving it a try mate. If you don't like it you can always go back to NOD32.

i virus check the downloads, especially if its an exe

and i tend to avoid keygens

especially as i work in IT, i am aware of whats risky!!!

What do you check them with if you have no scanner? Do you go to Housecall every time you wanna check something? :d

having virus scan of some description on your email is a good thing.

i've never had a virus on my network at work, other than some shitty excel viri from our head office (ironically)

our router at work has NAT.

Just one more thing if anyone is going to try Kaspersky - the first time you install it, it asks you to run a full scan. This can take AGES. It took about 4 hours on my machine. That only happens once though. If you do another full scan after that it takes just a few minutes.

It seems to update 3 or 4 times a day too, plus the updates are tiny rather than downloading the entire definitions file. That's not really an issue for people with broadband but it's good for people with dial up.

Did you register your Sygate Dee? If you did, they email you the link to the latest version of the main program.

No I didn't mate, I'm still using build 2525 which works great for me. I'm off to search for Kapersky. Is there any particular version I should test?

That's crazy. Every time you run Housecall you need to update to the latest definition file. That takes quite a few minutes even with broadband. It's a pain in the arse to scan a little keygen that downloads in the blink of an eye!
