'The MPC Remix' - another convoluted scratch beat and scratch battle

DJ Rock Well

Recommended Posts

I think it's time for another scratch beat battle, which might as well then roll into a scratch battle with the resulting beats.

Bear with me while I try and explain this and if I fail with words I've done a demo to explain myself and get the ball rolling.

Ever since I first got an MPC and started chopping up records, apart from sampling old records to make my own beats, I've also been chopping up other people's beats and trying to rearrange them. I only did it originally as a learning experience but as I got a little more competent it became a fun way to quickly make a new beat to practice cutting to. I've always thought of this technique as the 'MPC remix' because of it's origins, although I haven't actually done one on an MPC for years.

There are no definitive rules, other than restricting myself to just the instrumental I've chosen for source material. Then I try to flip it by chopping and rearranging the chops, with a few effects to expand the limited sound pallet. Personally, I love it when you end up with something that still has obvious bits of the original but in a new context. Only having someone else's beat for samples has big limitations of course, but a scratch beat only needs to be simple... plus, if it was too easy it wouldn't be a challenge anyway :d. I dunno, sometimes it feels sort of liberating to not get too involved and just grab some sounds, find a groove and bash out a quick, simple beat.

Here's one I made to kick things off.

Starting with this beat/instrumental

I made this

Erm, yes... So choose a hip hop beat you didn't make or have stems to and try and flip it into a new 2 min scratch beat - how far you want to take it is up to you, twist it out of all recognition if you fancy!

Post your entries here and please at least name the beat you've chopped or post if possible.

As before, all submitted beats will be used for a scratch battle and the beat used in the winning scratch video will by default be the best scratch beat and therefore, winner.

You've got three weeks (Wednesday 11th April) to submit, which is quite a long time for what's meant to be more of a quick instinctive process, BUT... because of the format for deciding the winner I think you've got more chance of winning by posting more than one beat ;)

Nice concept,Rock.

As it's a scratch/beat battle I wont be entering myself, plus I'm pretending to be busy working on my E.P. thingy and some other stuff anyway at the mo,but good luck to everyone who's taking part.

Looking forward to hearing what folks come up with for this one!

Not sure if I'm feeling this but I thought I might as well chuck it up. I fired up the MPC 2000 Classic again, went digging and flipped the Busta Rhymes & Hurricane G. - Far Away track, produced by Diamond D.

Phonetic - excellent! Probably just repeating myself as I can't remember if you're strictly an MPC head anyway, but all and any production tools/samplers welcome!

Yeah I only use my MPC now'er days. Can't imagine choppin samples with a mouse any more, though I do still use Acid pro for recording..

So to clarify, I can only use sounds from the original track & not be adding me own samples (i.e drums or whatever)?

I just realised I made one of these a couple of years ago. I'd jsut installed the imaschine2 update on the bus on the way to meet jimmy and jack and chile in galway, was super hyped about making beats with it cos you could now sample straight out of your itunes library on the phone which wasnt possible with version 1.... so this was the first thing i sampled in:

and I made a skratch beat:

Daaayum Psych you killin this one son!!!

How you liking the 2k? I love mine but rarely use it as its soooo slow. And saving to floppy disks is just such a pain in the arse..

Cheers man. Yeah I'm really enjoying the 2000, to be honest I wasn't to keen with it when I first used it but the old girl has stolen my heart, still learning my improve my workflow on it and trying out new tricks on it . If I need to knock up something quick then I always use the 2500 with JJOS as I know the machine workflow back to front. Floppy disks man lol, remember damu the fudgemunk squeezing each his beats on one floppy disk. I would suggest a SCSI CF reader but they are mega bucks, will find the M.O. Drive thread on MPC-Forums and Pm it too you, probably the best way to go storage wise for the price mate.

i tihnk matt's found psych's favourite thing :)

Lol Sy, Gotta do something productive while Zarecord 2 is stuck at the pressing plant ;)

I was loving the floppies at first for novelty value but that's well worn off now haha

I got my 2k as a bit of an impulse purchase. Planning to sell it on but I do love it.

Iv got a 2500 in storage at me mums whilst Im trying to move house & a 1000 I keep at home cos its so little & I pack it away on a shelf.

Lord willin' I'll even make a beat on it tonight...
