Limited edition blow-up Steve dolls?

TAKE MY MONEY NOW!!!

As soon as Deft hears they're ltd, I'm sure he'd be after a few of them.

Don't tell Shkreli though, in case he buys up the lot and starts taunting me videos of him with his entire blow-up squad stood behind him.

The doll sounds good. Do I want new skratch piklz on ltd vinyl? Seems like I should but I feel I could live without it.

You should rock doubles on your golden setup. But hurry up there's only 998 left (2 records will get handed out to Hip-Hop-Royality Rob Swift)...

Cos nothing sells faster than "limited edition"... What a lot of unscrupulous record labels do is say a limited 1000 of one colour vinyl, then another limited run of another 1000 and so on. Every one can say "limited edition of 1000" on the cover, even if they've done 10,000 in total.

41 friend requests? That's the power of having the same name as much more famous DJs!

we (cut & paste) do limited runs, but it's kinda out of necessity as we can't afford to do massive runs. so when we ran out of 7" records (which came as a bit of a surprise cos I didn't expect so many people to want 7" scratch wax at the time) doing a repress in red seemed kinda an obvious thing to do to keep it interesting, especially seeing as a lot of portable setups are gonna be out in the wild and on display.

I try not to make too much of a fuss over the LTD thing, i'll admit I've advertised our stuff as Limited Edition, but to be fair it works as an incentive for me with other labels! It does seem that thud kinda milk it though. I was surprised at first when they did the kickstarter thing but i then thought that i'd rather see a company formed out of support directly from it's fans/customers than be beholden to a small group of investors who can steer the company because they fronted the cash.

Kickstarter is a risky thing though, I've backed a couple of things and seen nothing so far from them. I think we got really lucky with our campaign, but once that first campaign got our thing started, I didn't expect to keep doing kickstarter campaigns for every new project. I would probably do it again if i wanted to do something ambitious that really needed a lot of investment, like making some hardware or something.

but yeah basically I'm just trying to say theres a fine line between pointing out something is limited and milking that idea to sell 10,000 records like rocky was saying. also I would only expect to get 1000 copies of something pressed before having to get the masters and stampers done again because that stuff does wear out, so doing a repress isn't always so simple.

i got a super rare limited edition of the super seal 7'' - it's black (not trendy neon green with pink dots) and i believe it's the world's only super seal 7' that is actually 12'' big. i think i should put it on ebay for like 200 bucks...

Just for reference, my previous comment about exploitative limited editions was definitely not aimed at Cut & Paste or any other small scratch wax labels. In their case I actually think the exact opposite - they should keep on pressing up another run every time they sell out and there's still demand. Scratch records are for using and abusing, it makes no sense to strangle the supply (or encourage speculators to save them and try and get silly prices online after they've gone).

Aside from Thud, what I was referencing in my previous moan was actually limited edition soundtrack labels. Like Death Waltz for instance. They've done some great issues but they've also padded them out with some dross. Soundtrack collectors are generally some of the most easy to panic people out there and some out of print sound tracks do sell for stupid money. Death Waltz prey on this - the other day I was looking at one of their releases with a big sticker on the cover saying 1 of 500 pressed. In reality this one was the clear vinyl run of 500, there was also 500 black ones pressed, 500 white ones pressed and even 300 green ones done for people on their mailing list. So that's 1800 copies pressed of a very forgettable score there was never much market for in the first place. Except they incited enough 'limited edition panic' to sell them... not just to people who wanted to but and listen to the score of course, but hundreds of speculators to stick in eBay and discogs.

I think it's a bit the same with this new ISP album. Of course they can and will sell more than 1000 copies of the LP. But this way they'll shift the first 1000 almost instantly. Then they can go on social media and "oh my, those sold out way faster than we ever could have predicted. Due to this surprise demand we're gonna press one more limited run". Once the second run have also gone, they can announce... well, you get the the picture.

yeah, it is a marketing tactic that can definately be over-exploited. I just wonder where the line is between doing limited runs and SAYING you're doing limited runs..... I guess in the Death Waltz example the '500 pressed' doesn't make clear that there were in fact more than 500 pressed. 500 pressed THIS TIME maybe.

anyway, i just got my red 7" CNP003 and they do look nice :) glad we did it! I wish I COULD predict with certainty how many is a good amount to invest in but then I might end up with hundreds of unsold records sat on a shelf that could have been a whole different project. In this case, lots of people asked for another run of them and we did it. I think the dodgy way of dealing with the scenario would have been to press em all at once and then just SAY they were limited edition. I can still give Thud Rumble the benefit of the doubt that they are not trying to trick people into panic buying, I think that even though they are 'big' they're still not so big that they can afford massive pressings of each project at the same time. maybe i'm being naive :)

Yeah, like I said, I hope you guys keep on repressing your titles as long as there's demand. In a year or so when both my copies of Combinations... are shagged, I'll be the first to pester you for a repress ;) It must be hard to have to predict the market though, especially wether you'd be best putting your limited funds into repressing or a new project... nobody wants to go to the vinyl equivalent of your own book re-pulping.

I'm afraid I remain a Thud-sceptic though - over many years and incidents I think they've shown themselves to be pretty cynical businessmen.

Cut & Paste has been heavily exploiting me for years! Whoring me out on the streets, giving me barely enough to sustain myself. When will the madness stop?

MWAHAHAHAHA - now get back to work and make me some MONEY

Hey Steve - I'm in the same boat as you; still waiting for the puzzle piece singles...

What's interesting to me is the time it took them to get the 7" breaks out. They were more than happy to pounce on the portable craze - no 2 year delay there!

At the very least, they should have sent out the singles digitally and actually communicate with their backers.

I like to imagine that at Thud HQ they've got a blow-up doll with a photo of Steve's face sellotaped to it :)

I think it used to be the face of DJ Gutter...later replaced by the face of DJ Flare

Thud doesn't hate me that much do they?

You don't make hate to a blowup doll, you make hate to it. So basically they love you. A lot.

I see Thud Rumble last week had a 3 day limited Edition white vinyl sale on Gag Seal Breaks, Cop Porn and Superseal 3D for $10 each. Take the piss big time, just finish what you started or admit defeat and refund everyone that has backed on the puzzle pieces. I sure that kickstarter must email you a receipt for you pledge so they won't lose money hand over fist to people trying to make a quick buck saying they had backed the puzzle pieces when they haven't.

Steve how much did you pledge for the campaign?

Ain't those limited Trx mixers supposed to have all 3 faders inno pros? But that shit never happened right?

Don't think they ever did say Innofader pros for all 3 faders Kian. I'm sure the reports from the start said it was integrated Mini Innofaders for the cross and line faders.
