Steve
It's weird because I just had a look on Asis and 2tall had posted about something I was gonna post earlier today. Do you think that scratch DJs all sound the same these days? There's definitely some skilled scratchers on the message boards, but unless there's a name associated with the file I wouldn't know who it was in most cases. I'm talking pure solo cutting here of course. What do you think?
Frost
yeah solo cutting files get old quickly imo. especially when is its always aaah and fresh thats gettin cut.

Chee
Listening to scratching is only interesting to scratchers. So I guess the longer you've been doing it, or the better you are, then the more you get bored of it. You have to be able to understand what's going on to appreciate what's actually being done on these Ahh & Fresh practice files. I've tried this with my friends - they think a Revolution-esque type of track is waaaaaay better than a dope Rucker solo cut file, whereas I think the opposite. It's not exactly music you can listen to to relax to, dance to, make out to, etc. I listen to solo cut files for biting purposes purely, but it's cool, cos I still enjoy it. And everynow and then, the overall style does change slightly, which is when things become a bit more interesting for a short while again. Huw
i stopped listening to scratch music properly about a year ago. i'd say 97% of all scratch music is fucking durge, and everyone acts like it's awesome. straight up power cuts are fun to listen to though... I'd much rather listen to a mix tape, scratch track, juggling witha little scratching then just solo cutz

Max
I think scratching is dying. There's only so many techniques to learn and ways to combine them. After a while it all starts to sound the same. It seems like most people learn their 2 clicks, three clicks, and chirp combos, and then just keep doing those over and over again. It's difficult coming up with original substance, and enough of it to make an entire track of. I think what's really going on is that people are flaring too much. They learn how to do it and they they do all flares and flare-combos. For example I don't hear a lot of other people doing my reverse tear-chirp combo, but I can't do too many times without it sounding old and repetitive. That's why i like listening to cuts by people like steve, because he almost never flares. Granted, I wish i could do my two and three clicks at full speed but sometimes I'm kinda glad that I can't post a file full of flares. As soon as I start combining my reverse tears with flares, then the scratch starts sounding like everybody else. But as Tom pointed out on skype, if i combine them with crabs, then they sound original. Flares flares flares. Cut that shit out.
Guest Vekked
personally i've never been able to properly listen to ahh freestyle files that much... like some I can listen to like the pharaohs of funk, chile, tyra, deeswift, veteran... like there's some, but I can't listen to rucker and toadstyle and them do much, haha, i dunno why, i can understand a lot of it, it just gets annoying... I can't listen to a-trak freestyle either... the only reason I ever record 'em is to get feedback on my technique so I can improve, I don't do them for a good track to listen to kinda thing... haha but I reckon if you play guitar it's the same thing with soloing, my friends are all into rock and that, and sometimes they rave about this solo and how sick it is and it's the mother of all solo's, but like... sometimes it gets boring, I wanna hear another hook instead of the solo long soloing in general is essentially only for people that play the instrument, it's about technique rather than sound a lot of times... I dunno, try listening to other instruments actually solo practicing in a manner equivalent to an ahh freestyle in scratching (technique over sound) and see if you really enjoy, haha... I reckon it's with every instrument, you just notice it more when you're around it all the time and stuff @max- I agree with too many flares a lot of times, cuz they sound fast and technical and stuff, so people do them... but I don't agree with so many techniques to learn... I know I've 'invented' a lot of techniques that I've never seen/heard before, or taken some to another level that I have... and I know i'll do it again, every 2-3 months I stumble upon something I've never seen/heard/done before by messing around... I don't record them in my freestyles tho ... but i reckon it's not about the technique so much as the person doing it, it depends what your intent is, if you're doing the flares to sound good, they prolly will, but if they're doing them to be fast/technical, they probably won't... pz! 2tall
why cant scratching to be used compliment songs instead of trying to take over them<{POST_SNAPBACK}> go and do it then... or check out shifting tides, seriously - this is a realisation i had about 3 years ago, all scratch is a fad unless you can really back it up with new ideas, and even then its still only a method, which can result in disjointed ideas forced out from the turntable
Mista_Ed
oh jeezuz fucking christ... this "topic" rears its head year in , year out. i REALLY cant understand why people havnt grasped the fact that scratching is just that. SCRATCHING.... it doesnt mean SHIT...dont beleive the hype. basically... everyone needs to take off their tank tops, shave off their chinny beards stop taking this shit so fuckin seriously. scratch if u enjoy it, if u dont....then dont do it. dont expect anything from it...and if u do, then be prepared to put more in than you will receive. scratching ISNT music....i dont give a fuck what anyone tries / tried to argue.... its a horrible noise that u can make sound alright. if u dont like all scratch stuff....or if solos "dont impress", then again, go have a wank or do somethin else... LIGHTEN UP, and get a grip. this is chopping noises with bits of round plastic.... if u want to hear / perform real music - learn to play piano ffs. if u are bored by it - dont listen to it - simple. PEACE!!!!

cocoB
then define music music is a bunch of sounds put together to make a full spectrum of sound thats it, cutting aah is music. cutting your hair, recording it, banging a plastic cock on a table, recording it.. then mixing it down is music. john cage had some seriously cool statement about that once... doesnt matter its all music, whether u think its good music is up to u. The all scratch movement of superheroes is limiting yourself. Do whatever u like, whenever u like it and uhm argh ooh aah thats my 2 cents

Mista_Ed
hmm... im not arguing over definitions of music with u coco!! haha forget whether its music to you or me... im just saying...what you just said really: "Do whatever u like, whenever u like it" if it bores you - THEN FUCK OFF and dont listen to it. ive scratched since 91....i listen to barely ANY dj music WHATSOEVER.... that doesnt mean to say i dont thoroughly enjoy doing it, and will continue to enjoy it... its pointless sitting on the net complaining about it, dissing it etc etc why bother? get on with it if u enjoy it...if not, then stop cuttin and sell me your equipment cheap.
