DJ Rock Well
...and that they didn't have to resort to such lowly tactics in the glorious heyday of musical creativity (the 1960s), point him towards Isaac Albeniz. 0:00 mins 0:30 mins http://youtu.be/pKmkOIlHbok I always knew that Spanish Caravan was based on classical music, but until today I honestly didn't know this one. Anyone got any more early "samples" they know of?
djdiggla
Led Zepplin stole loads of material both lyrics and music http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zTz_iX_L0VA

Wax On
My Sweet Lord totally bites a tune, chiffons I think? Thats more plagiarism than sampling though
DJ Rock Well
Good call diggla, initially I was just thinking of them as another rock band that played blues covers. But your right, they definitely took it further than that and were pretty cheeky about what they tried to get away with. An out of court settlement with Willie Dixon stands as good testament to their habitual "borrowing".
DJ Rock Well
Wax - yeah I suppose plagarism, particularly when a bit of creativity was thrown into the second version, is the spiritual forbear to sampling. That same idea of taking a little bit of someone else's tune and repurposing it to your new needs.
Wax On
For sure. Also Supersonic nicks the My Sweet Lord guitar line. And the start of the Sunshine Of Your Love solo is Blue Moon
DJ Rock Well
I never knew how The Jam got away with this without crediting George Harrison - at least they don't on the 45 I've got. http://youtu.be/fdSqpT6gfDU

Blak Randy
I think making songs from samples is harder. Then again I can't really make any kind of song.
Guest petesasqwax
there's a beauty on an early 70s Japrock album which starts and finishes with them literally playing an Axelrod record, but I'm buggered if I can remember which group/album it is. I'm hunting through Japrock LPs to find it... bloody enjoyable way to the pass the time to be honest
Guest petesasqwax
found it!http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EUP6Pw2715g
Guest petesasqwax
i think there's a rich tradition of this kind of thing in Japan. Major Force referenced it in their 10" on Apeman under the name The Japanese Noise Band. They grabbed the same Grand Funk Railroad loop Shadow used for "Hardcore (Instrumental) Hip-Hop" ("Nothing Is The Same") and basically jammed over it (which is a clever pun (that nobody cares about) because 1/2 of The Japanese Noise Band was Kenji Jammer...). goldielocksnthethreebrares
Sampling is fair game. It doesn't justify it in the eyes of the law, but if I paid for the copy I am going to sample off, you aint pinning bad karma on me!Your making something better at the end of the day, its kinda like tuning a car, if I stick a turbo on my vw, should vw be able to sue me?
