Guest loop skywalker
Apart from all the lugging about and setting up equipment and having to play shit music for weddings and stuff are there any positives???I am seriously thinking about working for myself now and djing is the only thing i might be able to do apart from porn pirating, fed up with trying to be a club dj although i really didnt put enough effort into that...but i hear mobile djs are high in demand and charge a fucking fortune.Thoughts please...i know theres a few overheads like digital license and insurance and other stuff but overall do you think this would be a good venture|??? x2k
I djed at 1 wedding to see if I'd do it and decided never again...chances are you'll be expected to say things on the mic also...for me djing has always been about playing good music to people who appreciate it...I get no please what soever from playing shit tunes to people who don't care. That being said you might enjoy it but it's not for me!
Guest loop skywalker
Speaking on a mic doesnt bother me,i would like to ultimately just do clubs without lugging shit around but i can see a little enterprise here, especially after hiring a mobile for my mums party and seeing how much it cost. This isnt for the love of music, purely a way of working for myself....really wanted to see if there are any potential pitfalls like having to get accountants and if there are any hidden things apart from licenses and insurance that i may come across.I fucked off working for companies, they take the living piss. Gizmo
If you can get into the whole video thing then you might be able to clean up in your area. I was talking to a guy the other day who is deep in the mobile scene. He did one party where he was doing video as well as audio and got heaps of business because people were so taken with being able to watch Cher and Hot Chocolate videos instead of sitting through hours of tedious old music. It's not a huge premium but it is a money spinner and gets you even more business. And if you combine it with your current skills, I'd say you do really well. Just lay off the 10 minute of turntablism at a wedding. Check out www.promobile.org.uk for info. As for running the business - I don't use an accountant. Just run a tight ship paperwork wise - give written quotes and get paid before you leave. Keep receipts for everything. Doing taxes is a doddle, especially if you're pulling less than £15K a year. Compile all your income and expenses into a spreadsheet, remember to claim allowances for capital spend (your gear) and you can also get an allowance for mileage to and from gigs etc.
Guest loop skywalker
cheers gizmo....some very good points there mate.Turntablism at weddings is a must though hahahaha...i remember my wedding disco...i hated the music so much that i ran home (very pissed) and handed the dj a really hardcore ragga jungle tape ...needless to say the dj had the sense not to play it hahaha wouldnt have gone down well with the olduns
Cable
You can even claim shit like clothing, aftershave, etc.....stage wear and all that jazz.... Video mixing at weddings sounds like a dope idea....although a TTM57 and SL Video will set you back another £1,000....Although I've heard Numark's Vinyl is pretty nice.... chile
me mate does alot of live sound and has had some dj work at weddings and such. he cant mix or anything but yea he was telling me how he just downloads packs of popular music off the net, loads it into the laptop then stands there for a few hours trying to look busy, sounds like easy money to me if you can sort out the licensing and equipment. djdj
I worked for a guy running mobile discos for about a year and loved most of it. I used to haul a transit with bass bins, amp rig, cd cases, lights, smoke machine, kareoke tv's, the lot ...Certainly need to be physically fit. Also, I found playing "crappy" tunes was counteracted by the fact that people loved it.Play spice girls and get 100 girls all dancing infront of you makes it all seem worth while. ;0) It can be a very hard job. Lots of lads coming up to you saying things like "play oasis or we'll kick your head in" and once oasis is playing, a group of girls coming up and saying "change to spice girls ... or we'll kick your head in". :0) Keep a good balance and use the "I'll just coming up to playing that one" excuse often. This keeps everyone happy and gives overall job satisfaction. Christmas and New year are definately the best as you can charge £400+. About 3 or 4 times regular charge. Sometimes Club DJing is boring as you only get to play one genre, weddings you get to play 60's,70's, dance, sould, whatever ... I am of the opinion that ALL music genre's have Great and Crap tracks, so as long as you stick o the goodies, you'll have a blast. I also worked for one of the better guys as he had more lights and smoke machines to make for an overall much better show. Hope this helps! Peace!djdj
