Guest Deeswift
Nope. Don't buy it! What is it, a Prescott core P4? I wouldn't touch it, personally. Grahics card is weak, there's no mention of the PSU it uses, etc etc. Operating SystemOperating SystemMicrosoft® Windows® XP Home EditionWindows® XP Service Pack1CPU SectionMicroprocessor Full NameIntel® Pentium® 4 Processor 3.0 GHz (800 MHz FSB) with HyperthreadingMicroprocessor ManufacturerIntelMicroprocessor Speed (GHz)3.0Microprocessor TypePentium 4L2 Cache (KB)512Frontside Bus (MHz)800MemoryMemory TypeDDR SDRAMMemory Speed (MHz)400Memory Size (MB)512DrivesDVD±RW DriveYESFloppy Disk DriveYESHard Drive Capacity (GB)160Hard Drive Speed (rpm)7200Speed CD-R Write24Speed CD-ROM Read40Speed CD-RW Read40Speed CD-RW Write10Speed DVD+R Write4Speed DVD+RW Write2.4Speed DVD-R Write4Speed DVD-ROM Read16Speed DVD-RW Write2DVD-ROM DriveYESGraphicsGraphic Card Full NameATI® Radeon™ 9200 (VRAM 128 MB)ModelRadeon 9200ProducerATIRAM (MB)128MultimediaExternal SpeakersYESOutput Speakers 2x (W)3Speaker Depth (mm)18.3Speaker Height (mm)18.7Speaker Width (mm)9.5Front Interfaces4 Pin i.LINK™ (IEEE1394)1USB Port (quantity)3USB Port Type2MemoryStick™ TypePro supportedFlash reader for MemoryStick, Smart Media, Micro Drive, Compact flash1Audio L/R in1Composite video in1S-Video in1Rear Interfaces6 Pin i.LINK™ (IEEE1394), 400 Mbps1Antenna in1DVI out1Headphone Jack1Line in1Microphone Jack1Parallel Port1PS/2® Keyboard Connector1PS/2® Mouse Connector1RJ-11 Direct Port1RJ-45 Direct Port1S-Video out1TV out1USB Port Type2USB Port (quantity)4VGA out1SPDIF Port1Audio L/R in1Composite video in1S-Video in1KeyboardFunction Keys12Programmable Power Keys6Scroll Mouse1ModemBuilt-in ModemV.90NetworkEthernet 10 BASE-T/100 BASE-TXYESGigaPocketGigaPocket TV Tuner BoardYESDimensionsHeight Main Unit (mm)398Width Main Unit (mm)184Depth Main Unit (mm)377Weight (kg)19Pre-installed Sony SoftwareClick to DVD1.3DVgatePlus 1.1GigaPocket5.5PictureGear Studio2.0Sonic Stage1.6Vaio Media2.5Pre-installed Third Party SoftwareAdobe® Acrobat® Reader®6.0Adobe® Photoshop® Elements2.0Adobe® Premiere®6.0 LEMicrosoft® Works7.0Quicktime™6.1RealOne® Player6.0Adobe® Acrobat® Elements1.0Adobe®Acrobat® Elements1.0Adobe® Photoshop® Album2.0 SEAdobe® Photoshop® Album2.0 SEDrag and Drop CD + DVD3.0Drag and Drop CD + DVD3.0Norton Internet Security2004 (includes 90 days of complimentary live updates)Norton Internet Security2004 (includes 90 days of complimentary live updates)Software Supplied on Separate CDRecovery CD1 setSupplied AccessoriesAC Adaptor for Speakers1PS/2® Keyboard1External Speaker Set1PS/2® Optical Wheel Mouse1Remote Control1WarrantyGuarantee (Months)
Steve
What do you want it for? I'd buy it. Looks alright for £600. Not the best for the latest games but then if you don't play games it doesn't matter. If you're a big gamer I'd say go for something else though. Guest Deeswift
You could build a better PC yourself, you're paying for the name Sony. If you wanna buy it though, cool, spend your money how you wanna.
Dan
it's not for games (i got ps2 for that) it'll' be the base for my music stuff i'd love to build my own but can't afford it (an i can't save for shit) i get this for 600 quid over 6 months with fuck all interest
2ndhand
word ps2 or xbox are good for games.interest free sounds like a good option too. could you buy all them parts for 600 pounds?
Banano
If it's for music, then i'd give it a miss. I've had loads of customers have problems with external soundcards and software on sony vaios. Even though they are marketed as multimedia computers they seem to be really flaky in terms of music making in my experience. nice spec for £600 though. Guest Deeswift
I could build better for that money. It doesn't cost a lot, especially if you order certain parts from the USA where everything is loads cheaper. As I said, I wouldn't touch it. Fuck pre-bought computers, they're usually shit. PS2 and XBox are "OK" for games, but they won't run the only games that are worth playing right now and they won't keep upwith a PC and a good GFX card. Fuck pre-bought computers, they're usually shit. i defer to your knowledge on this one, i don't really keep up to date with component prices and system prices. Again, if you're buying a comp for music i'd really steer clear of Vaios. PS2 and XBox are "OK" for games, but they won't run the only games that are worth playing right now and they won't keep upwith a PC and a good GFX card.<{POST_SNAPBACK}> word. You get all the cutting edge PC games 2-3 years later and then you get to run them in TV screen resolution. and then you you have to split that up if you want to play multiplayer. and if you play multiplayer you can see everyone else's screen ! :'(

Steve
whats £ 849.00 in american dollars? He can get it for £600 man - that's $1098. Computer components are more expensive here though. This reminds me - Dee you asked me to get you some memory months ago and I forgot. I'm sorry mate! Next time you need a favour from me keep reminding me cos I'm a dopey twat. Guest Deeswift
No worries Steve, I got some anyway. The stuff I wanted from america was equivalent of £180 (1 GB OCZ 3700EB) but almost £300 in the UK. I ended up buying the new Crucial Ballistix PC3200 which worked out pretty cheap for such good memory @ only £88 for a 512 MB stick / £176 per GB. http://www.anandtech.com/memory/showdoc.aspx?i=2145&p=

$a!n+
I have a VAIO latop thats takin care of me for bout 2 or 3 years now. I like it. Yeah sometimes paying for sony is paying for a brand name (car stereos) but in certain circumstances they make reliable consistant products (ex. minidisk players, headphones, video cams.) I like sony. But then again I like stanton!
Liam
in certain circumstances they make reliable consistant products (ex. minidisk players, headphones, video cams.) 1. Sony do not manufacture ANYTHING any more. It is all sub-contracted.2. I've had three Sony Minidisc players cop out on me3. Sony headphones break off at the jack (and the older ones at the headband) due to poor design Sony video cams are untouchable though. Pz

Guest Deeswift
I have a lot of Sony gear, all of it has been flawless. 2 MD recorders (JB520 and JB-940), AV amp STR-DB940, DVD writer DRU-512AK, Sony headphones, multi-component remote AV-2000, PS1, PS2, etc... none of it has every gone wrong. So yeah, I disagree.
Dan
I like Sony my MD is fine the PS2 is cool and i've got a walkman i've had for about 8 years that's good also the only time any sony headphones have broke is when i stood on them. that pc is now 700 quid (tossers!!!) so i'm building one with part from ebuyer (staff discount!) Liam
I wasn't saying Sony gear is BAD, just that it isn't as reliable a brand as it used to be. Sony CD seperates do kick ass, agreed, the high end ones are built very solid too. Still, I'd rather sink the money on something like a Linn unit or whatever. The PS2 was always a poorly designed piece of shit from day one and three PS1's crapped out on me Anyway, my point wasn't that Sony gear is bad, but most of it does pale in comparison to the alternatives I bought a wicked Sony ATRAC cd player so I could listen to mp3 CD's on holiday and I have to say it is one of the best £50 I have ever sunk on anything. It feels pretty cheap, but works a treat. With a few CD's, who needs an iPod????
