Got any good links to ROM sites? Post 'em up. Problem is, a lot of sites seem to disappear. And many of them just take you round in circles. Others are dodgy as fuck. So let's have a list of good ones. here's one: FreeROMS

For finding all kinds of emulators: Zophar's Domain

Come to think of it, I had an EMULATORS & ROMS thread on the original DV board, but it's probably since become a little outdated. Should we update it? I will post it below anyway, just for the sake of it.

BTW, if you're seeing boxes around the images in the post below, you are using a nasty browser.

.:. EMULATORS .:.

These are generally considered some of the best videogame console and arcade emulators available. We listed the current version / build of each emulator, but obviously this is subject to change. We'll keep track of all that and update this page when needed. Certain emulators are not covered, such as Atari, Spectrum, C64, etc, and we will eventually get around to this, but for now check out some of the thousands of emulation sites elsewhere on the internet. Here's a site worth a visit: ZOPHAR'S DOMAIN

The KING of emulators -- M.A.M.E. supports almost 5000 games, old and new. Many of you are probably aware of M.A.M.E. (Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator) but we thought we would give it a mention anyway. Basically, it is a means of playing all the old-school arcade games like Pacman, Scramble etc., as well as some newer ones too, on your pc. Old arcade machines used to have the games contained on a board so the game could be changed by swapping circuit boards without having to make a whole new cabinet. M.A.M.E. actually turns your pc into the machine - if you see what we mean. The games are generally perfect emulations of the originals. There's two versions of M.A.M.E., a command line version or a Windows® version. The latter is the best and can be found here:

.:. DOWNLOAD MAME .:.

Finding the games can be difficult but if you search for "mame roms" in Google you'll find plenty. All you need to do is download MAME32 and unzip it. Then just drop the game zip files into the Roms folder created. No need to unzip the games. Simple as that!

.:. 32X / GENESIS /SEGA CD.:.

Gens

Current version: v2.11

Website: Gens

Gens emulator is excellent. It's easy to set up and will make the old MD / Genesis games look very smooth with a little manipulation via the option menu's, and more specifically the filters such as 2XSai. Most games are very well emulated and play exactly as the originals, possibly better in some cases. Obviously, the average PC is way more advanced than thee old 16 bit consoles, so graphics can be drastically improved.

.:. NINTENDO 64 .:.

Project64

Look for v1.5

Website: Project 64

Project64 can be tricky to set up, especially if you don't have a powerful graphics card. It's still usable even on a fairly modest PC -- anything with above a 1000 Mhz CPU, GeForce 2 series or equivalent card and 128 MB RAM should be OK. There's some good setup guides online, just search on Google. Plus, P64 comes with a help manual that's pretty good already. It's a good idea to experiment with different video and sound plugins, but not without knowing what you're doing. Check out http://ngemu.com for more info.

.:. GAMEBOY ADVANCE .:.

VisualBoy Advance

Current version: v1.7.1

Website: VisualBoy Advance

VisualBoy Advance is known to be the best GameBoy Advance emulator around. Nice options for smoothing out the display, some great rendering filters make a big difference.

.:. SNES .:.

Snes9X

Current version: v1.4.1-1

Website: Snes9X

Snes9X is a decent, reliable Super Nintendo emulator. Also check out FCE Ultra.

A page full of SNES emulators can be found at Zophar's Domain.

Website: ZOPHAR'S SNES PAGE

.:. PLAYSTATION .:.

ePSXe

Current version: v1.6.0

Website: ePSXe

Currently one of the best PlayStation emulators around, ePSXe can be tricky to set up on some systems but basically PSX emu's don't really get any better than this. Plays PlayStation games from any region on your PC -- PAL, NTSC, Jap, Imports or backups.

Connectix VGS

If you can find it, best version is v1.4.1.0 + VGS Video Patch.

This isn't a bad PSX emulator, but fairly basic. It is now discontinued and unsupported since Microsoft® bought Connectix. This emu will run many PSX games (including backups) on your PC. We found v1.4.1.0 on Kazaa LITE, but nowhere else.

The VGS Video Patch will enable this emu to run on Windows® XP and can be found on Aldo's site. Also's site is worth a visit, there's some useful, free stuff, and much of it is made by the man himself:

Website: ALDO'S TOOLS

.:. FRUIT MACHINE EMULATION .:.

Website: Fruit Emu

Fruit-Emu contains all the files and resources necessary to run emulations for over 400 Fruit Machines. The aim of the site is to keep alive the memory of Fruit Machines which are over 3 years old and therefore are no longer available for play in arcades.

.:. CONTROLLERS .:.

All the emulators featured above (and many more) are playable using a PC keyboard, but you might find this isn't ideal, especially with N64, PlayStation and any other emu with more than basic controls. The best controller produced so far? Probably Sony's Dual Shock that comes with the PS2 console. This can be used when connected to a PS2 pad to USB converter. These converters are easily available online and often cheaper than buying a dedicated PC game pad, so if you already own a PS1 or PS2 pad you could put it to good use. Rumble features are supported, as is the use of analog control.

.:. SUPER DUAL BOX .:.

I use this for all PC gaming (wherever possible), and it works good. All PS2 Dual Shock buttons and functions are supported, plus it costs less than buying a decent dedicated PC control pad.

Price: 12.90 incl. VAT / £14.79 incl. special delivery

Service from the website above was goody.
