how come I dont see much people here that is interested in thre3style?

Is it like different for you guys? I see that people are more into dmc in uk or is it just in dv?

What are your thoughts on this years thre3style? and how big is it in the uk?

There's currently no threestyle battles in the uk, so we can only enter via the lucky bastid wildcard battle in the run up to the finals. I was considering entering that this year but I've decided putting most of my energy into production is what I want to do instead.

I don't find either very interesting.

It's always been true that in these comps there were a bunch of guys that sounded the same (in terms of technique) and that played the same sorts of songs, then you'd have a minority of stand-out DJs (DJ Cheese, Aladdin, Craze, Rafik etc.), but my interest started to wane when people started moving away from hip-hop/electro and into dubstep, EDM and all that stuff.

Also, for me, a lot of the sets sound too production-heavy.

So, unlike when I was younger and I used to eat this shit up and watch DMC videos like I was watching porn or something, now I'm like "just show me the best 2 or 3 vids as I don't give a fuck about the rest".

Yeah your not going to discover any new music watching the Red Bull battles thats for sure. I do quite enjoy some of the sets with interesting transitions but Its gone a bit the way of DMC online whereby a Youtube search brings up hundreds of videos of lower standard people who probably wouldnt enter a live battle. 15mins is definitely too long for some! I just want to see/hear the top few after the judges picks

That's what turns me off red bull threestyle sets. Although the rules are very open minded and allow for a lot of creativity and I've seen the odd transition I've thought has been clever, most DJs have been playing it safe and play what I'd consider very obvious or played out music, which is the reverse of what I consider a good dj should play. Missy Elliot get your freak on was played out 10 years ago, I'm not going to be impressed with you doing a preedited blend you did in ableton that you could be doing live on decks... I want to see djs breaking new music and, in this sort of context, bringing new tech skills. I don't think I'd seen someone actually do a proper mix transition without editing it in before hand other than doing an acapella/instrumental blend before this year

completely agree.

i've lost a lot of love for DJ comps over the years - i still respect all the DJs who put the effort into their routines, but i really don't understand why EDM has taken over. it's ruined it for me, without sounding like some hip-hop purist - i miss the sound of worn out "aaahs" and "fresshhh" that have been battered to death over months of practicing a set.

i guess to sum up my point, battling seems to have lost it's soul and now it's about who can drop the heaviest bass line.

Very true! EDM has very much taken over the party scene, but I think thats part of evolution and moving on. Personally I dont like that either.

The thing about redbull is I think its more on the commercial side of music rather than the roots.

You see that's an argument that a lot of people will have, but that doesn't mean it's a good thing.

I do wonder if most of these battle DJs even like the music they're playing? And that it's just become so ingrained into the scene that they have no choice really, in order to fit into the structure of things. I'm not saying that we should be still listening to '90s hip-hop routines, i just think that EDM has somehow managed to take over.

DMC to me was always about distancing themselves from the club DJs, I accept that a lot of those DJs have gone on to become successful and fair play - but i guess i just don't agree with the way it's changed.

I spoke directly to one of the main judges of the comp and they're open to djs playing anything they want. The problem is with battling in general is that djs will see who is successful and bite them thinking that's how to win.

no no, I got nothing against it, I just dont like it when people consider it "battling" when they just plainly beat match their way through.

Like not against redbull, its for people who enter competitions and just beatmatch edm from one song to another like theyre mixing an hour long set.

and im actually competing redbull right now lol.

I just like good DJs, idgaf what battle or format. If I see something kinda new or interesting I'm down with it.

But I agree that most battlers don't bring anything of value to the table, only the top 2-3 guys usually have much to say. DMC last year was the most interesting to me in ages cuz there were 5 or so DJs or teams who did stuff I thought was cool enough to watch again. Probs my main motivation for battling is that I believe in the idea of battling and it's potential but in practice it hasn't yielded much talent in recent years... I don't think I would battle if I liked the quality of battles. But sometimes I question how much difference I make too lol.

Is this why you battled yourself in round 5?

haha you killed it man!

Haha thanks man. I had to make it interesting somehow... It has been a pretty slow DMC online thus far.

I tried to enter in Argentina, sent them a video, but as I'm not a resident more than 5 years they wouldn't let me in. To be honest, without being a dick, i think i would have won it.

I didn't know about the lucky bastid thing, but i'd like to do it, if not this year, then certainly next.

Although, I would insist on not using any edits/editing at all. 15 minutes is enough time to be a proper dj.

I would also like to do it not using any electronic music at all. the challenges of mixing weird tracks or live recordings that go off time is part of the buzz for me. and also, i hate most modern music. But its not just for the sake of being cool as i do love mixing cheesy 70s and 80s party and weird shit.

And I'm all for clever transitions, but fuck being the modern 8 ball where every link is that tone play shit. it's too easy/annoying.

also it's a disgrace that there isn't one in the UK

Flip did really well last year, and came 2nd in the worlds, with about the right mix of party shit and just really interesting ideas.

like I hate "turn down for what" but they way he mixed it with "everybodys heard about the word..." it was really good.

and you see the development of his set through his Flip will mix it sets...

you can see the difference to how flip's and eskei's sets rock a big room differently. i appreciate flips more, but understand how eskei wins.

(which were so good, that some dude in one of the regionals basically did a cover version of his sets...)

At the risk of sounding like a dick, didn't Craze and Klever do that on Skratch Nerds 2 with a different beat?
