The more you build them the more you'll be sure you can strip out. I bet the next one is smaller.

You can find a list of the components you removed inside the ISO. If you have WinRAR installed you can look inside at the contents of the ISO and extract certain files. The file you need is LastSession.ini. Just double-click the .ini file to open it.

Can I build another ISO on another computer, and transfer just the iso to a computer with a cd burner, and it will burn fine? Or do you need to burn it on the computer you made it on, because the files are on that computer (XP, SP2, and so on)?

Im looking at the LastSession.ini.. Howcome it doesnt show SP2 at the bottom under Hotfixes like it does on yours? Also, you keep mentioning changing things instead of removing, I couldnt figure out how to change anything. And there was nothing that asked for an account username and password, unless Im supposed to rename the admin account and use that as my account?

Can you look at my list of removed items and tell me if you see anything that I didnt remove that is big and probably not needed, just something I missed?

There's a couple of things in there that I don't think you should have removed. Jet Database Engine is one of them. I'm not 100% sure but I think this is needed. Also you got rid of the Luna Theme, so basically your XP will look like Windows ME or 2000. Was this intentional?

You should have enabled the uxtheme patch, plus changed the TCP/IP to 50 or 100, plus various other things. I would remake the ISO, to be honest.

The reason you don't see any hotfixes is because you probably didn't include any. Apart from RyanVM's update pack, I used 2 more extra hotfixes released after Ryan released Update 1.2.2, that's what you see at the bottom of my list.

When I say "changing" things I mean tweaks and various options. nLite isn't just about removing stuff, it's about making a version of XP to suit your needs. This is why I constantly stress not to follow what I do, because mine is built for me, it won't neccessarily work for other people. You have to look into this stuff, you can't just go removing whatever, you have to know what you're removing because it only takes one small mistake to mess the whole thing up.

The admin account should be renamed, otherwise it'll just be "Administrator".

Yes, I am definitly going to remake the ISO.. first I'm going to do a bit more reading and preparation. I really wasnt that prepared yesterday, I kinda jumped into it. Oh, thats what Luna theme is, lol.. whoops... I was not sure about what to do in the patches part, if anything. What is the uxtheme patch? Are there any other important patches to change? Yes I definitly understand about changing things, it is like customizing your XP. It does things for you that you would normally do after you install, like changing settings. I just thought you meant that you could change the things that you can remove, like some Drivers for example. The tweaks are cool by the way, it IS fun doing this also, haha, like you said in the guide. I think I am going to make my new ISO before Ryans v1.3.0 comes out.. in that case, could you link me to the downloads for those extra hotfixes you added to your ISO please?

Yeah, you're definately getting the idea man. It's important to be patient, read up on stuff and get it right. Sorry if I seem like I'm nagging you about it.

OK... The uxtheme.dll patch: In XP SP2, Microsoft disabled the option to use anything other than "official" themes. The patch enables you to use any Visual Style. These Visual Styles are like skins, except they don't use any extra software like WindowBlinds and similar programs. It's not a problem that you didn't select this option really, you can always use NeoWin.net's Multi-Patcher, but as you removed the Luna Theme plus didn't select the option to use the patch you're just giving yourself less options. Leave Luna in, and select the option to patch the uxtheme. The black XP theme I use is here. I made it into an idiot-proof installable version: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=03PP5X8D

The other patches: I suggest leaving USB polling as it is (125), change the TCP/IP to 50 or 100. Mine is at 100. I disable SFC File Protection (check the box).

The extra hotfixes I used I will attach to this post. Download the zip file, unzip it and inside are 2 .exe's.

Hmm, ok I understand that patch. Woah, I was about to ask about that black xp theme but you seem to have edited that post lol. I just wrote a whole big thing and it got erased because I quoted something wrong.. damnit. Yeah Im leaving Luna in for sure. The only thing I am worried about is removing something that will affect my networked computers. Even though they are networked through the DSL router, do you think there is something that will stop me from viewing other pcs files or vice versa. Like doing this: \\pcname\sharedfoldername.

I dunno if you missed this post, but I would like to know if I can do it.. >>

Can I build another ISO on another computer, and transfer just the iso to a computer with a cd burner, and it will burn fine? Or do you need to burn it on the computer you made it on, because the files are on that computer (XP, SP2, and so on)?

Networking isn't my strong point man, I have very little knowledge about it. Again, as I said before, if you're unsure, leave it in there or look for info on Google. Also, you will have noticed that nLite gives a description of pretty much everything you can remove or tweak. I find that the descriptions generally priovide enough info, and also many of the things which are not wise to remove are highlighted in red.

Regarding your ISO question -- yes, sure you can build it on one computer then transfer it to another computer and burn it to disc.

I'm just building another version right now (this shit is addictive). I just removed about 37 of the services, so let's see how it goes! I think pretty much all the ones I'm gonna remove are OK to remove though.

Link to comment

Hahaha mad addictive. Im gonna make another one on this computer then transfer the ISO to the other computer later because I barely have time on that computer with the CD burner. There like 30 bucks now, I should get one here..

Also, regarding the google thing. If you just look up the title of more than half the things you can remove, you get shit results. Because they are all basic things, like lets say you put Alerter... You know what kinda results you'd get? lol

Link to comment

Guest Deeswift

Ha, yeah. Alerter service can be removed completely.

Here's my finished result of today's work. 131 MB! I hope this shit works, it's the smallest XP I've had yet.

Haha that sick if that works. Hm, Alerter was a bad example, try Peer-to-Peer. Type that in google and see what you get. But I wanna know if it will affect file share with computers on my home workgroup. Thats harder to find out.

I just read an old thread and saw you talking about VMware. That sounds really good, because I havent even tested my first ISO. I dont wanna have to keep reformating. Do you still use VMware? If so, can you tell me where to get it.

Link to comment

Guest Deeswift

No it won't, it just removes Microsoft's Peer to Peer, it won't affect filesharing programs and as far as I know it won't affect the PC's on your network. Don't hold me to that statement though.

You'll have to look around for VMware, I can't remember where I got it. Shouldn't be too hard to find though.

Anyway, not only does this XP work, it installed in 6 mins 35 seconds! :o It's rock solid so far.

Link to comment

Haha dope.

I didnt mean filesharing programs, I meant filesharing between networked comps, which you dont know anything about so forget that..

Is VMware the only program needed to test the OS out with, or do you need another program to go along with VMware?

Link to comment

Guest Deeswift

You just need VMware and VMware tools. To be honest I don't really use VMware these days, I kinda got to the point where I trusted my XP making abilities and I'm prepared to remake it if it doesn't work.
