I can't help but think that there's a degree of idea floating going on here. Apple have never made a product like this before so instead of committing to a product and sticking to it knowing that the market will lap it up, they're coming out with it early to see what people think so that they can tweak and change the concept.

Outside of the original wow factor, there's now some clear thinking being posted around the net about the good and bad things about the iPhone. The thing is that Apple might not even get this product to market as quick as they'd like if the number of lawsuits being touted around is true. This has the potential to make or destroy Apple. It's quite risky for them.

I doubt that its that risky. Its another piece in their "digital life experience" and fits well into their product portfolio. Apple has 3 nearly independet businesses today: iTunes Music Store, the iPod and their classic PC business. The iPhone and AppleTV are two more to come. If one fails they will burn a significant amount of money - but that wont kill them.

Btw: Apple has made a product like this before: the Newton. In relation it was even a lot more riskier because it was the first PDA at all. And even the failure of that didnt kill Apple.
