Covering Your Tracks

OK, trust me, I don't need any help with this kind of thing. But my friend (honest) just got a computer for the first time and as i'm running windows '98 and IE 98AD I'm of no help to him whatsoever.

So how does he go about clearing his form information etc.

He will appreciate your help very much.

Running Crap Cleaner should do it: -

http://www.ccleaner.com/

Alternatively, if he's using IE, then empty out temporary Internet files and cookies, delete the history and then do the following: -

Tools - Internet Options - Content - AutoComplete - Clear Forms - Clear Passwords - OK - OK

That gets rid of search history etc.

The index.dat files can get quite large over time and anyone with the knowledge can open them and see which websites you've looked at. If it's just a case of hiding dodgy porn sites from your parents, then I wouldn't worry too much, but it's worth deleting the index files from time to time just to regain space.

Yes mate. That's how I do mine. I delete them in safe mode and they all get recreated when I reboot (except they are empty obviously).

Here's the way I do it (taken from the old DV board) if anyone's interested: -

1. Restart your PC and tap F8 as it's booting

2. When the menu boot menu appears select "Safe mode with command prompt"

3. Log in as "Administrator" if you get the option

4. When the command prompt appears type "cd\" without the quotes and press enter

5. Type "del index.dat /s" without the quotes and press enter. Note the space before /s

6. Once the process is complete type "shutdown -r" without the quotes and press enter to reboot. Note the space before -r

There's loads of index.dat files on a Windows machine. More than you think actually.

I remember the thread from the old board. I think I came to the conclusion that I'd let Tracks Eraser overwrite them rather than deleting the index.dat's manually. They never get too large, just a few kb's, so it's no problem.

Some of them are large(ish) mate. They can't be seen from within Windows no matter what you do. Try unhiding all files and showing system files and doing a search on your C drive for index.dat. I got 6 files totalling a couple of hundred kilobytes.

Then try the method above, but instead of typing "del index.dat /s" type "dir index.dat /s" at step 5. I then get 13 index.dat files totalling just over 4 megabytes.

I dunno if Tracks Eraser Pro gets all of them but you can use the above method to test it.
