Steve
There's loads of different antispyware programs out there, but SpywareBlaster will prevent a lot of spyware from being installed in the first place. It works by adding some entries to your registry and adding dodgy sites known to spread spyware to the blocked sites list. The best thing about it is that you don't have to have it running all the time. You simply load it up, turn the protection on, then you can close it again. You only need to fire it up once in a while just to check for any updates. It works with IE (plus IE based browsers) and Firefox and has the following features: - Prevents the installation of ActiveX based spywareBlocks tracking cookiesAdds unwanted sites to the blocked list in IEEdit browser default pages and search settingsEncrypt and backup Hosts filesLock the home page in IE to prevent unauthorised changesDisable and block Flash contentAllows custom blocking It's dead easy to use. Install it, run it, update it, click the button to enable all protection and that's it. The program is free and can be downloaded here: - http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

Steve
It puts entries in your registry and in the Retricted Sites area of Internet Options which stops a lot of spyware, toolbars and other crap installing. It's not infallible by any means, but considering it has no impact on the speed of your PC at all it's worth doing.
