Ben
I've been writing music for years and i've only just bothered to tweak around with EQ and compression. Yes, i know a lot of people say they're the two most important effects you can add to your music, but i'm a lazy hippy. Anyone know any good tutorials that also go deep into the physics/mechanics of these.
dextrous
Check here and in particular here and here. Most of the articles on that site are about mastering audio, but the info is still highly relevant. Plus Bob Katz is the best mastering engineer in the world so it's worth listening to what he has to say.
Chee
In a nutshell, compression is all about making the softer stuff louder, and the louder stuff softer ie it COMPRESSES the sound. The overall effect is that there's less dynamic variation in the sound, so you can boost the volume without getting clipping or distortion -> your shit sounds louder, but not distorted.
