  1. Once things start getting labeled, a small portion of the essence is lost. In the main subject, there's DJ's and turntablists...Basically people who just scratch and people who mix, scratch, do parties/clubs, etc....Now, there's DJ's who do non-hiphop related stuff like those high school and wedding dj's. You got cats who just spin funk/soul/jazz breaks, but might not mix. Some cats collect just samples and like to play them, but might not mix (or even know how to mix). The best way to look at things is ARE YOU GOOD OR BAD AT WHAT YOU ARE DOING? If you're just practicing cuts, and plan on doing just that, then don't worry about being able to rock some party with ill selections. You're here to cut, not mix. If you're here to be the ill party DJ, come correct with the selections...Make sure you're shit is fluid, and bring your a-game. If you're a collector who just likes to spin breaks and samples, bring your a-game always. Even if you don't mix, at least come up with some kind of fluid and unique way to play your music. Find a way to stand out. And if you're a standard party/club DJ, come with some skills. Incorporate all of the above and get good at as many aspects of DJ'ing as possible. Because you better believe that there are DJ's out there who got breaks, who can cut, who can juggle, and who've got some ill records to bring to the audience. Bottom line...just aim to be the best at whatever you're doing.
  2. Here are some artists whom I consider to be STANDARDS in funk music...Don't bother searching for obscure super rare stuff until you've got every album (or as many as you can find) from these artists.... Kool & The Gang James Brown THE JB's Parliament Curtis Mayfield Seriously...if you JUST bought those records by these artists, from 12" to 7" to LP, you'd have a seriously funky collection. Then you can branch off into other stuff. For the most part, there were probably about 20 groups that managed to avoid ONE HIT WONDER status. A lot of the most funky music made were by small groups who only made one good 45, and then fell off. I highly recommend TURNTABLELAB.COM. If you just sit there and read through and listen to all the records in the funk/soul/disco section, you'll gain a whole lot of knowledge. I try to do this on the weekly with all their music sections, just to keep in the know about good stuff. Not all 45's are warped man...just keep lookin. Sometimes a good 45 adapter can make the difference between an un-playable and a playable 7". And of course....the biggest resource...talk to others who are in the know. There are a ton of message boards dedicated to this topic. Just do a search and get in where you fit in.

  5. Big up everyone at DV...Sorry, I should've posted up in here before hittin up the other sections. As some of you have figured out, I host and produce my own radio show out of California, USA. Been doin that for about 4 years now. I've been DJ'ing for a little less than 9 years now (I'm 23 years old). Used to be really heavy in the battle scene back in 2000-2002, but just couldn't dedicate myself to it, so I wasn't winning as much as I could've if I'd been focused. So basically now I'm just focused on gettin my name out in Los Angeles, which is where I DJ the most. Other than that I'm just tryin to link up with heads that appreciate good music and what DJ'ing is all about...shit, I'm also gettin into computers and what not. Built my first computer this year...ready for another one! haha!
