Once things start getting labeled, a small portion of the essence is lost. In the main subject, there's DJ's and turntablists...Basically people who just scratch and people who mix, scratch, do parties/clubs, etc....Now, there's DJ's who do non-hiphop related stuff like those high school and wedding dj's. You got cats who just spin funk/soul/jazz breaks, but might not mix. Some cats collect just samples and like to play them, but might not mix (or even know how to mix). The best way to look at things is ARE YOU GOOD OR BAD AT WHAT YOU ARE DOING? If you're just practicing cuts, and plan on doing just that, then don't worry about being able to rock some party with ill selections. You're here to cut, not mix. If you're here to be the ill party DJ, come correct with the selections...Make sure you're shit is fluid, and bring your a-game. If you're a collector who just likes to spin breaks and samples, bring your a-game always. Even if you don't mix, at least come up with some kind of fluid and unique way to play your music. Find a way to stand out. And if you're a standard party/club DJ, come with some skills. Incorporate all of the above and get good at as many aspects of DJ'ing as possible. Because you better believe that there are DJ's out there who got breaks, who can cut, who can juggle, and who've got some ill records to bring to the audience. Bottom line...just aim to be the best at whatever you're doing.
