OK, looking good now. Check off these items in HijackThis: -

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [pmdvsmaj] C:\WINDOWS\System32\pmdvsmaj.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [pmdvsmaj] C:\WINDOWS\System32\pmdvsmaj.exe

O21 - SSODL: SysTray.Excn - {1722ECFF-4356-4f5b-B534-E67294FE75E9} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\ghbhgmko.dll (file missing)

Make sure you close ALL other windows, then hit Fix Checked. Reboot once you've done that. Start Internet Explorer and hit Tools, then Internet Options. Click the Programs tab, then the Reset Web Settings button. Click the General tab and type in the homepage you want to use and hit Apply then OK.

Job done!

I strongly suggest installing Service Pack 2 for XP as soon as possible along with any other critical updates from the Windows Update site: -

http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

Also, you might wanna start over in Sygate. Double click the little arrows icon next to the clock to open it and hit the Applications button. Click Remove All and then hit Yes. Each time a program needs to access the Internet, a message from Sygate will pop up asking you if this is OK. If you want to allow it then check the box not to ask again and hit Yes. If a program name pops up trying to access the web and you don't know what it is then Google the filename and it should tell you. If you get no results (as in the case of pmdvsmaj.exe) then assume it's bad and say No. You can always change it later. Better to be safe than sorry. Once one infected file has a connection to the web, it'll usually download others and that's how you end up in a mess.

Post back if you have any other problems, but you should be OK now. That'll be £75 please. :p

One other thing. If your PC is running nicely after following these steps, then disable System Restore, reboot, then enable it again and create a new restore point. Viruses and spyware can hide in a restore point and if you ever have to use it, it'll not only restore all your settings, but the viruses too.

Right click My Computer on the Desktop and choose Properties. Hit the System Restore tab, then check the box that says "Turn off System Restore on all drives" and hit Apply then OK. Reboot, then go back and uncheck the same box.

Looks good mate. There's nothing to worry about at all in there. You can fix these optional items if you want to: -

The updater for Sun's Java. Doesn't appear to work and you can check for new versions manually by visiting the site: -

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [sunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_04\bin\jusched.exe

These 3 provide a taskbar icon for your graphics card to enable fast access to the settings. You can change the settings via Control Panel or by right clicking the desktop: -

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvCplDaemon] RUNDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\NvCpl.dll,NvStartup

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [nwiz] nwiz.exe /install

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvMediaCenter] RUNDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\NvMcTray.dll,NvTaskbarInit

"Adobe Gamma Loader.exe is installed alongside Adobe Creative Studio products and allows the colour calibration of your video output device." I've always told people to disable this item as it has little use. That seems to be the general advice given on most HijackThis forums: -

O4 - Startup: Adobe Gamma.lnk = C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Calibration\Adobe Gamma Loader.exe

If you choose to fix anything, close all other windows before hitting Fix Checked. A backup is made anyway if you want to see what the PC runs like without these items.

You can also disable an unnecessary service. Hit Start then Run and type "services.msc" without quotes and hit Enter. Scroll down to the NVIDIA Display Driver Service, left click to select, right click and choose Properties. Set the "Startup type:" box to Disabled and hit Apply then OK. The changes take effect on the next reboot. If you decide not to fix the 3 entries above relating to the graphics card, then leave this service alone.

That's basically it mate. If you're having any particular problem then post back.

Yep, you gotta virus mate. Bring up Task Manager and end this process: -

svchost32.exe

Note the "32" on the end as there will be several regular ones called svchost.exe that are OK.

Run HijackThis and check off the following: -

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AuGust] C:\windows\system32\svchost32.exe

Close all other windows and hit Fix Checked. Browse to the Windows\System32 folder and delete the svchost32.exe file. If you can't see it enable hidden and system files, but it should definitely be there.

That should do it, but if you have any other problems post back. As long as you haven't allowed that file Internet access then it should be a straightforward removal.

Right mate, you've managed to get a program on your machine called PS Guard from somewhere. It's a fake spyware removal program that's actually a trojan. It probably installed just by visiting a web page. Before you begin with HijackThis, look in Add or Remove Programs to see if PS Guard is listed. If it is, uninstall it and reboot before continuing. Chances are it won't be though.

Download CCleaner from THIS site and install it, but don't run it yet.

Put HijackThis into a folder of it's own rather than running it from the zip file. If you don't do that it won't create any undo files.

Press Control/Alt/Delete to bring up Task Manager and end the following processes if they are running: -

shnlog.exe

intmon.exe

They are both trojans. Now run HijackThis and check off all of the following: -

O2 - BHO: HP Class - {FFFFFFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFFFFFFFFFA} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\hp6F73.tmp

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NeroFilterCheck] C:\WINDOWS\system32\NeroCheck.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [sunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_03\bin\jusched.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [P.S.Guard] C:\Program Files\P.S.Guard\PSGuard.exe

O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)

O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} (RdxIE Class) - http://software-dl.real.com/25d4449a8db01f...ip/RdxIE601.cab

O16 - DPF: {64311111-1111-1121-1111-111191113457} - file://c:\eied_s7.cab

Close all other windows and then hit Fix Checked.

Reboot your PC into Safe Mode by tapping F8 as it starts and selecting it from the menu that appears. Start Windows Explorer and hit Tools then Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure the following are set like this: -

Show hidden files and folders (Selected)

Hide extensions for known file types (NOT selected)

Hide protected operating system files (Recommended) (NOT Selected)

Then hit Apply then OK.

Now, you must browse to these files and folders and delete them all if they exist: -

C:\WINDOWS\System32\hp6F73.tmp

C:\WINDOWS\System32\shnlog.exe

C:\WINDOWS\System32\intmon.exe

c:\eied_s7.cab

C:\Program Files\P.S.Guard

At this point run CCleaner and it'll clear out any other temp files.

Reboot the PC into regular Windows. Start Internet Explorer and hit Tools then Internet Options. Click on the Programs tab and hit Reset Web Settings, then hit the General tab and re-enter your desired homepage. Finally, click on the Security tab, Internet Zone icon, then make sure it's not been set to low - if it has, click on Default Level. Then hit Apply then OK.

Hopefully that should be it. The particular trojans you have are about as nasty as you can get, so chances are they may reappear. It's probably a good idea to post a new HijackThis log at this point to make sure everything is OK.

This is the trojan you have: -

http://www.sophos.com/virusinfo/analyses/trojpuperd.html

Furthermore, intmon.exe monitors the main process, and restarts it if it is terminated. Meanwhile the main process restarts the monitoring process if it is terminated, and recreates the file intmon.exe if it is deleted.

Could be a pain in the arse to remove, but I think this is probably what's eating your CPU.

the shit hit the fan this morning.

last night i left windows running and i heard the pc speaker beep, nothing seemed unusual, but i switched it off.

this mornigng booted up, windows reboots continously, i've come to the office to make rescue disks and get some tools and try and even locate a copy of windows in case its a full clear out.

thanks for your help, i will follow the steps and take all the goodies home too. i think it reboots when trying to load a system file.

You have one piece of malware on your system. Go to Add or Remove Programs and look for SafeGuard Protect PCShield. It may just be called PCShield. If it's there, uninstall it and reboot the PC before continuing.

Download CCleaner from THIS page and install it, but don't run it yet.

Start HijackThis and do a scan. Check off the following items: -

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.karoo.co.uk/searchpage.asp

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.google.co.uk/

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.karoo.co.uk

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - _{D7CD08F0-D691-11D8-9669-0800200C9A66} - (no file)

O2 - BHO: SafeGuard Protect PCShield - {564FFB73-9EEF-4969-92FA-5FC4A92E2C2A} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\sfg_0f37.dll

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PCShield] regsvr32 /s "C:\WINDOWS\System32\sfg_0f37.dll"

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RegisterDropHandler] C:\PROGRA~1\TEXTBR~1.0\Bin\REGIST~1.EXE

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot

O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [RegisterDropHandler] C:\PROGRA~1\TEXTBR~1.0\Bin\REGIST~1.EXE

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [PCShield] regsvr32 /s "C:\WINDOWS\System32\sfg_0f37.dll"

O14 - IERESET.INF: START_PAGE_URL=http://www.karoo.co.uk

O16 - DPF: {FF0C042C-98E9-4C36-B2EC-E21FDFDCEF75} (InstallCtl Class) - http://download.redswoosh.net/Installer/rssoft.cab

If you don't use Adobe Gamma Loader (allows you to calibrate your monitor for use with programs like Photoshop) then also check off these two: -

O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Gamma Loader.exe.lnk = C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Calibration\Adobe Gamma Loader.exe

O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Gamma Loader.lnk = C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Calibration\Adobe Gamma Loader.exe

Close all other windows and hit Fix Checked.

Now, you must browse to this file and delete it if it still exists: -

C:\WINDOWS\System32\sfg_0f37.dll

If it won't delete, then hit Start then Run and type "cmd" without quotes and hit Enter. Type the following commands pressing enter after each one: -

cd c:\windows\system32

regsvr32 /u sfg_0f37.dll

There's a single space in the first command after "cd" and two spaces in the second command, either side of "/u". Once you've done that, exit out of that screen and you should be able to delete the dodgy dll file.

You need to update to Service Pack 2 for XP as soon as possible really. You got infected via an object that downloaded by just visiting a certain web page. SP2 makes some changes that will stop this happening (in nearly all cases anyway). If you haven't used Windows Updates in a while then there will be a lot of critical updates that you need.

If you want to get rid of ZoneAlarm, then try Sygate instead. You download the free version from THIS page.

Let me know if you have any further problems.

Looks good man. All the nasty stuff is gone. Fix just this one item: -

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k

ZoneAlarm works well as a firewall, but some people have problems with it. If it's not causing you any trouble then I'd stick with it. If it is, then give Sygate a try: -

I'll PM you later with a different antivirus option. ;)
