TUNE UP UTILITIES

.:. TUNE UP UTILITIES 2004 .:.

I've tried many registry cleaners and tweaking programs, but so far this is the best. It has several tools including the following: -

Registry cleaner

Registry defragmenter

Secure shredder

Recover files after emptying the Recycle Bin

Disk cleaner

Memory optimiser

Change Windows styles and effects

Internet speed optimiser

It does a fair bit more too. It creates small backups of all the changes it makes so if anything goes wrong, you can go back and restore your system.

I used a couple of registry cleaners and a registry defragmenter. Right after doing so, I ran Tune Up Utilities. It found 60 redundant registry entries which it cleaned up. It also defragmented my registry and decreased the size of it by 14%. I have to say my system is running noticeably better since running the optimisations.

All the tweaks it makes are either settings in Windows or the registry. It does not run in the background all the time, unless you use the memory optimiser. If you want to download it, you can do so via a BitTorrent client by clicking this torrent:

This file includes the English and German (for Monkey-Hands!) versions of the program and a keygen. It's a 13MB download. I've virus scanned it and it's definitely clean.

Results achieved by using this type of program vary from system to system. If you try it and it makes no noticeable difference then you have lost nothing. If it makes things worse, you can undo the changes. Chances are, it will make things better so I suggest giving it a try.

Hmmm. I know it's worked out well for you Sigma, and I've got no doubt it will equally as good for everyone else, but it slowed the boot process of my PC right down and last night I ended up reinstalling XP (and the previous installation of XP was only 3 days old!).

Basically, on my machine, at XP's loading screen, the progress bar goes across not even once, it goes approx. one third of the way across and I'm into Windows. After using TuneUp Utilities it was taking at least 3 times, then I got a delay before it booted into Windows.

Well, having just spent around £1100 on my PC's base unit alone, and then tweaking XP Pro SP2 so it boots hella fast, I didn't like what happened. It did shrink the registry by 7%, and it fixed a few broken shortcuts, etc. But for me it wasn't worth putting up with the slow boot process, so I uninstalled TuneUp Utilities and it was still slow. I reinstalled TuneUp and restored the backups (they are in the Documents and Settings > Application Data folder, and they are kept even if you uninstall the program) but it was still no better. In the end I just said screw it, I'll reinstall XP from fresh.

I have no idea why this happened to my machine, I'm just gonna have to avoid this app cause it obviously doesn't like my PC. I'm sure it'll work better for you guys but it just didn't work out for me.

Yeah I was going to write something about this mate but I thought I'd leave it up to you.

I would say that if you have a new fast PC with a fresh XP installation then don't bother with this app. If, like me, you installed XP a long time ago and in the mean time you've added and removed a lot of programs and files, then this app will probably boost performance. I used the registry optimiser and defragmenter and also the Internet speed optimiser and my system is better for it. I guess the rule of thumb is "use it at your own risk", the same as for any registry editing tool.

On Download.com, it gets a positive rating of 89%. 11% of people seem to have had a problem or just didn't like it. It seems this program does not like Norton (who does?) so if you have that installed then perhaps don't use this.
