Steve
If you have ever had problems with certain settings changing when you reboot your PC, or your machine taking a while to shutdown or freezing completely, you might want to try this little MS app. To check if it affects you, look in the Administrative Tools section in your Control Panel and click on Event Viewer. Check the Application and System sections for any red crosses, then see if it says event ID 1517 or 1524 next to them (source Userenv). If either of those are present then it means that as your PC is shutting down, a certain service is freezing causing your registry to become locked. That means that some or all of the changes you've made to it in that session will not be saved. Not good. The solution is to download and install the User Profile Hive Cleanup Service from Microsoft's site: - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...&displaylang=en Once installed, an extra service will run and when you shut down it will make sure your user profile is closed down correctly and all your settings are saved. It runs constantly, but it only uses 1MB of memory so it has no affect on performance at all. I noticed these problems occuring after installing Kaspersky. It may or may not affect you, but it's worth checking because a corrupt registry can mean big problems.
