First is The Independents "Back From the Grave" (2001) This is a great punk/ska album. The official genre is called "horror punk". Joey Ramone was a big fan and helped them a lot. The singer sounds like a cross between Elvis and Danzig. Great album. I would give track highlights but there is hardly a song on there I don't like. It's fantastic start to finish. Second is The Fantstic Plastic Machine (self titled) (1997) I discovered this album while living in Japan in the late 90s. Not really sure why I bought it but glad I did because it totally blew my mind. It's like a modern version of those old surf go-go dance party movies put on tape. I think it was mildly successful in Tokyo but have never met anyone who knew the album in the US and sadly the entire album isn't even available on Spotify but some tracks are. It's part of a Japanese sub-genre called Shibuya-kei which is a fusion of lounge, french pop, bossa nova etc. "L'Aventure fantastique" is my favorite song... it's like the soundtrack for taking acid with Willy Wonka. "Dear Mr. Salesman" and "Bachelor Pad" have that hip surf party feel I was talking about. Some other good ones on there that go from french lounge to something that should have been on Pet Sounds. If you can definitely worth exploring. Third is The Moldy Peaches (self titled) (2001) So you may have heard some of these songs in that 2007 movie Juno but don't let that taint or define it. The band had been broken up for several years when that came out and the movie soundtrack barely brushes the surface of this insane anti-folk album. In my mind this band was completely overshadowed by the much more radio-friendly White Stripes. Also didn't help it was unfortunate enough to be released on September 11, 2001 and contained the song "NYC's Like a Graveyard". Nonetheless it's like a raw but beautiful glimpse into Adam and Kimya's most personal thoughts and feelings. This album is like if you crossed the White Stripes with Daniel Johnston. Very DIY from the cover to the phone ringing in the background on certain songs... it's like nothing else. Whole album is great but some songs to check out are "Who's Got the Crack", "Downloading Porn with Davo" and "These Burgers are Crazy". I went to watch "Beastie Boys Story" in Philly (they did 3 shows, one in Philly and 2 in NYC to film the Apple Special). They had this bit where there were huge stacks of boxes full of Paul's Boutique LPs that went unsold. At the end Mike and Adam got into a physical fight and Adam pushed Mike into the stack of boxes. Funny shit but it didn't make it into the special. There was also Adrock's story about the ring prank that MCA played on him that didn't make the cut. Ragz and Mudd started Jazz Addixx, with Ragz doing the scratching and Mudd doing MCing and the lion's share of the production. I had heard about Ragz DJing for "Jazz Addixx" for over a decade but had no idea how dope the album was. I finally got Ragz to get me a copy of Oxygen Refreshed (got his last one) and I was like "WTF! This is dope! Why didn't I know about this!?" Ragz says they went to Japan and the Tower Records there had a whole "Jazz Addixx" display and everything. Can't remember if it was on here or what but he saw a pic I posted and messaged me asking if I'd send him the sleeve for the mats. He didn't have any from that original run sadly. I realize this post is almost 3 years old but I am just going through the forums and saw it. Yoga and Q didn't exactly steal the idea behind my original slipmats (although they did screw Matt over who designed the original butter rugs) but they did take the original butter rugs that had the plastic bottoms to slipmat source and ask if he could reproduce them. Unfortunately, it was labor intensive, so they opted for cheaper mats. I will say that it was a huge coincidence that the next gen of butter rugs had the same material as mine on top, but then again that was what? 24 years ago. I actually don't unfortunately. The only ones I have left are the ones you sent me a long time ago and a 1 off pair that has the sewerslime logo printed on them. They were never used and still mint, but it was a 1 off. Maybe its time for some updated mats.
