Studio wiring basics

Recommended Posts

Howdy peeps,

Been away from DV and Super Scratch Sunday for for a while, had issues with hands going wrong so in that time I've been busy setting up a new business ( www.homstudiodoctor.co.uk )

I'm not trying to give anyone a hard sell, just to let you know I'v started a series of tutorials covering various aspects of setting up recording studios. The first being studio wiring basics and balanced vs. unbalanced connections.

It may be of interest to some of the folks here so here's the link...

Cheers

Matt :)

Listen to this man everyone.

I was sorely tempted to write a comment about it that tenuously relates the subject to some foolish and speciously reasoned racism, so it could look like every other comments section on the internet.

I.e. "We'd all have balanced cables if there wasn't so many immigrants using them all up."

or "I like this article but can't concentrate on it because i'm so mad about all the terrorist muslims who are all muslims who are taking over our country!"

or "When i was a boy the world was different than today and i don't like it. Stop this islamist, zionist, left wing agenda!"

or as a bonus "Why don't you stop pushing this left wing agenda! When will you learn that socialism has failed. We have to all not give a shit about other people's welfare and crush the dregs of society )who are holding us back!) If there weren't so many images of migrants suffering on tv and in the papers, taking up our air time and ad space, people wouldn't care about things!"

I saved it for here, though. I'm sure you are all very pleased.

That's an excellent article Matt. It never ceases to amaze me that I've been making music for so long (with some degree of relative success) yet remain entirely oblivious to so much that I ought to know

Ah you'll love the next one then...

"Ground loop hum, it's in the Qur'an."

And thanks for the kind words Pete, there's more to come :)

Very well written article. I'll start pointing people at it when they ask me about balanced cables :)

Some more articles I'd love to see (or maybe I'll write them someday) -

what ground loops are and where they come from

why vacuum tubes/expensive cables/"analog sounds better than digital" are bullshit

Nice one, that would be very much appreciated!

Ground loops is in the pipeline....

Plus I have some more mic shootouts coming soon.

Here's a previous one comparing the AKG 414 to the SE Electronics 4400a

I'm aiming for the next shoot out to include video.
