medinah_nitro
I haven't bought vinyl in a long time (around 10 years) as I lived in a tiny flat and put all my shit away in storage. I moved recently so started to get set back up so thought I'd go shopping for a few new records whilst I work on my man cave music room etc Jeez has the price gone up a lot of what am I going mad?!?! Used to be about £6 for a 12" and £11 for an Lp Now you're looking at 10 or 11 quid for a 12" and £20+ for an Lp Sorry I'm getting old is it just inflation or is they the price people are paying these days ?!?! Yours, confused buyer I guess most people are Seratoing these days ? Or are heads still buying wax?
Guest Symatic
my guess is a combination of inflation, people pressing smaller runs (which costs more per unit) and the fact that every vinyl press is completely overrun with orders, so there are more delays and other problems associated with that which might eat into peoples budgets..... I'd still expect to pay around £7 for a 12" single though, where are you shopping?
Guest petesasqwax
Sounds like you're looking at "boutique vinyl" prices there mate. We have 2 record shops in town - one run by a good friend of mine who specialises in secondhand vinyl (with a sick hip-hop selection) and the other which deals solely in new records. The first one has excellent prices and bargains galore, the second charges £20 an LP and only has shite (Death Row "super heavyweight" represses etc.)
medinah_nitro
yeah this was a beggars banquet in Kingston so my rant could be a bit premature ill check out some more shops in town! love vinyl or think that may be more house urgh
Guest Symatic
my rant could be a bit premature don't worry, there's pills for that i've only ever shopped in central london record shops in soho. i like dub vendor a lot. I've ordered online from honest jon's, good place and i have loads of old records of my dad's that still have honest jon's price tags on em
Guest petesasqwax
Oh, man - Beggars (Kingston and Putney) used to be one 2 of my favourite spots! A couple of friends of mine worked in Kingston - Dylan (who did stuff on various labels as King Cannibal) and Nick (Buddy Peace). People never realised how good they had it... and then the arse fell out of vinyl
Jon
For a 12" I'd expect to pay between 6.99-10.99 depending on the type of sleeve/artwork etc, an LP between 9.99-17.99, but more depending on the type of artwork etc.Since living in the midlands I don't get to go to Banquet very often but I think their prices are normal for a modern physical shop. Phonica in Soho seems to have similar prices when I've gone in there too.
goldielocksnthethreebrares
I remember when a mars bar cost 25p.
Phology
I think there's also a line between record collector, and digger. Collectors wont mind spending a few extra coins (if anything they prize expensive records), but diggers are a breed of bargain hunters who scoff at anything priced over £3. I'm a little of both, I try to find the happy medium.
Guest Symatic
i dunno though - if you were digging for breaks to make a commercially successful track, you wouldn't mind spending a bit to get that special sound..... lord finesse said something like this on his crate-diggers vid.... if he is gonnna make $10,000 from a track, $200 on a piece of vinyl doesnt seem so bad..... IF you make $10,000
Phology
..... IF you make $10,000 yeah in that sense it's not so bad, but for you're average Joe $200 on a record is a bit steep, I doubt I would ever spend that much!
DJ Rock Well
I remember when a mars bar cost 25p. But in those days, when you pulled out a mars bar in the playground, you were always in danger of one of the bigger kids going "Urgh look, he's got a Mars bars, he's going Mars bar party"
