Testing Unity as a Looper building environment

Recommended Posts

Update 2: iOS version available on the App Store. Should be compatible with iPhone and iPod Touch iOS 7.1 and up. iPad compatibility on the works.

Update: added Android version. Installation instructions in a new post below.

I was inspired by the Warflex apps and decided to try using Unity as a Looper building tool, mainly because I hate that most Flash loopers are PC only. Please give this a test and let me know if you find a bug or something that doesn´t work as it should.

Android: http://www.unit27music.com/download/Unit27Looper.apk (install instructions in post below)

The Mac version is a standalone app. The PC version comes as an .exe with a _Data folder, just place both in the same location and launch the exe.

nice work on the design man, does all the things :) yeah would be cool to have as a .swf or .exe that runs in elmedia or in a browser

Thanks for checking it out! The idea would be to be able to make versions for mobile devices too, and with the Flash support in those going away it's kinda hard.

I'll still look into making a web browser version available. Unity can build for web, but I haven't played around with it properly, and I think it requires to install a browser plug-in to run, but if it's feasible I'll put it out, or look into porting it to Flash. :)

Love the idea of using a portable game library.

Unity might be a bit overkill for a looper though, next you'll be making one in the Quake engine :p

Although I guess it's the editor that makes Unity so accessible?

Seems like HTML5/javascript would be a good language to use for loopers as it runs on practically everything ever made without plugins.

Either that or something like libgdx? - http://libgdx.badlogicgames.com/

ahhhhhh i seeeeee. i havent tried it on a phone, do i need to do anything weird or can i just download it onto my phone?

I'd need to build a version specific for mobile. I'm still looking into the specifics for different platforms, but I'll try to get mobile versions out soon for testing.

Quake? A multiplayer arena first person looper? You might be onto something! :p

Yeah, my biggest draw to Unity is how easy the editor is to work with and being able to code in C#. The need for a plug-in for web does kind of suck.

Thanks for the libgdx link, seems really cool. I'll pick it up and give it a spin.

I wasn't sure what chill and boost were meant to do and had to click on them to work it out. It is however, really cool to have the pitch.

someone should design a turntable with the working pitch. start/stop and the record could have the grooves like timecode and each section a different beat. #hellagoodideaifonlyihadtheskillstodoit

Just built an Android version:

http://www.unit27music.com/download/Unit27Looper.apk

http://www.unit27music.com/download/Unit27Looper.apk

To install:

1. On your phone, go to Settings > Security, scroll down to Device Administration, and enable Unknown Sources. This will let you install apps from outside the Google Play Store. You can disable it again after installing.

2. Go to your browser and download the .apk from the above address. You should see an animated down arrow indicating it's downloading. When the animation stops, the download is complete.

3. Open your notifications and click on Unit27Looper.apk. Your phone will ask if you want to install the application, click Install.

4. When the installation is complete, you can click Open to launch it.

I've tested this version on my own phone and it works properly, but if you find any issues with it please let me know along with what phone model you're using.

Big news!

You can find the Unit27 Looper now on the iOS App Store:

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/unit27-looper/id969873043?ls=1&mt=8

iPad compatibility should be coming soon, just gotta get my hands on one to test some resolution issues. Requires iOS 7.1

Also, got a web version up. It requires the Unity Web Player plug-in, it should ask to install it when visiting the looper page:
