doppelkorn
Just set up for a wedding tonight. Ground loop screaming is pretty annoying there. It's a new venue for me. Laptop is def the culprit. Ive seen a quick fix online which is to disconnect the earth pin of the laptop plug. What are the disadvantages of this? Dead soon? Deft
I would not remove the ground! Presumably the ground loop disappears if you run the laptop from the battery rather than the mains? DI box or double insulated replacement power pack is usually the answer. Power pack perhaps simpler, get to Maplin.
doppelkorn
Yeah off the battery it's fine. Maplin it is.
Mike-L
use two international travel adaptors. power supply plugintoUK >international adaptorintointernational>UK this bypasses the ground and ive been doing it for years
Deft
I'm no electrician but the double adaptor trick is not a great idea if it is a class 1 power adaptor, which it would be if you are getting a ground loop.
doppelkorn
My power supply doesn't say what class but why it it bad? On bus to Maplin now...
Deft
Class 1 relies on the ground of the electrical supply if there is a fault. Technically this means you shouldn't use equipment abroad with those adaptors, though everyone does. I could be wrong. If you can get a replacement power supply with a proper double insulated "figure 8" power lead (class 2) then that is your best bet.
Mike-L
fair enough I read up a little at the time and thought it was Ok with my laptop but I could be wraaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Guest rasteri
Maplin also sells DIs - http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/ultra-di-di20-professional-2-channel-di-boxsplitter-r63pf One of those between your mixer and amp and you should be sorted (Definitely don't remove the earth pin, it killed the battery in my laptop stone dead)
doppelkorn
OK my Maplin didn't have them in. Got two travel adapters for a quick bodge. Will be OK for one night? What's the danger?
doppelkorn
Thanks for the help BTW!
Deft
If the power adaptor develops a fault there is a theoretical chance of mains voltage getting to the laptop casing. I think. So, death. Probably fairly unlikely. Just stand on your right foot and use your right hand all night to be on the safe side.
doppelkorn
But you could extend that warning to anyone using their UK laptop abroad, right?
Deft
Yeah I think so, though I am not a qualified electrician.
