I don't use it on my PC like you do but my OG Xbox is running it and so is my soft-modded Apple TV. It's great. Really wanna put the larger HD in my old xbox some day to get the most out of the setup.

I completely agree with you Steve. This is my current set up and its complete bliss.

I have two dedicated XBMC boxes both with openELEC installed.

The openELEC in my bedroom is a raspberry pi, and the one in the living room is a mini-itx mobo.

I also have a dedicated media server with unraid which serves my htpc boxes so all my media is in one place.

My unraid box also has plugins such as sickbeard, sabnzbd, and plex(plex is pretty awesome as you can stream your meida from your server to a mobile device, tablet, laptop away from home).

Quick question Steve what OS is your XBMC installed on and what TVTuner do you use?

Here are some suggestions to install

-trakt (See my signature)

-youtube
-vimeo

-cdart(In the applications... when playing music it actually shows the disc image rotating like a cd)

-tvlogos

Also try messing around with different skins as some are really nice with rich features.

I've been using xbmc for a couple of years now and there is just nothing better for video playback and management, provided this runs on a dedicated box always connected to your TV. It quickly became a pain in the ass to plug my old laptop to my tv even though it was working fine.

I now have a dedicated htpc and an old apple tv 1 with the crystal hd card for each my tv sharing the same library.

I also have sickbeard, couchpotato runnning on my NAS and that makes using XBMC even better. This and addons like 1Channel really are worth looking into it.

@Tbtf - I've only got it installed on my desktop PC running Windows 8.1.

I have a bunch of movies on my PC, but a lot of the time I forget WTF they are and when I'm looking through them for something to watch, I end up Googling the names just to find out what the movie is, what genre it is etc., so I thought I would install this just to solve that problem, plus I wanted to check it out anyway as I'd always heard great things about it.

@dopp - The dodgy TV streaming is a hit and miss, although you can also stream recently uploaded TV shows that are scene releases and therefore decent quality (including HD).

wtf is everyone talking about?!   :z

XBMC = Xbox Media Centre. When the original Xbox was hacked, this was created as a way to turn the console into a wicked media box. Now it runs on all kinds of devices and various operating systems.

It gives you a really nice user interface for TV use. It pulls in data about your media files automatically from the web, so for films you get high quality box art, a synopsis, user ratings etc. so you get more than just a straight up list of files that you'd get with something like a WDTV. It also allows you to install add-ons, so you can add iPlayer, 4OD etc. etc. and there's add-ons that allow you to do dodgy stuff such as watching live TV channels that you'd usually have to pay for, or watching the latest movies.

It can handle films, TV shows, music, photos, live TV, plus it has all the add-ons.

There are even Linux distros designed to run XBMC, such as OpenELEC: -

So you could build a cheap, small, quiet PC, install that on it (which is free) and you have a really versatile, customisable, powerful media box to stick in your living room. Some people buy a Raspberry Pi and use that.

...there's add-ons that allow you to do dodgy stuff such as watching live TV channels that you'd usually have to pay for...

So, for example Eurosport or Sky Sports or American sports channels? What might the quality be like do you suppose?

True story: I managed to swag a first gen xBox off Mrs. dopp when we were very very first going out. Her and her sister had one and they had one game: Harry Potter.

At the time I was really into "hacking" websites and hobby electronics. My intention was to put XBMC on it but I never got round to it and here we are about 8 years later.

Would that same old Xbox be OK spec-wise today to run it and handle modern bandwidths etc.?

The quality varies and of course, the streams can go down or the links can be replaced. From what I can tell, there's no easy way to configure a TV guide in a way that the links will always point to particular channels, even if the links change.

There's a whole bunch of non-UK channels available though. Here's a live NBA channel I just checked out: -

The quality of that one was great.

Try installing it on your desktop/laptop at home and see what you think.

XBMC sorted. FTV installed without significant issue but Mash won;t work for some reason.

I can download/access/open(?) the repo but when I click Get add-ons then Install on Mash it shows "Downloading 0%" for like a second then that disappears and it doesn't seem to do anything.

Yeah, that guide was done using an older version, although the steps are still the same.

If you can get as far as step 18 I don't see why it's not working as you've clearly downloaded the repo that contains the necessary files. I don't know what to suggest unfortunately.

Guest rasteri

just installed XBMC on a raspberry pi for the first time to discover that Mash Up no longer exists as of about a week ago :(

Steve, have you found any decent alternatives? I tried Genesis but it doesn't seem to work very well.
