Steve
If you go with ADSL (through a phone line), then the speeds you'll get are largely dictated by how far you are from the nearest exchange. You can find that out here: - http://www.samknows.com/broadband/mapping/mapping.php It'll also tell you the sort of speeds you can expect from the ISPs (some of them) in your area. I think Virgin Media and Sky Broadband are arguably the best current choices. Virgin if you can't get decent speeds via ADSL - I consistently get 20 Mbps with Virgin, but with ADSL I'd be lucky to hit 3 Mbps - and Sky if you live close enough to an exchange to get good speeds, because it's one of the few (perhaps the only) UK ISPs that has truly unlimited broadband with no traffic shaping or monthly cap. I guess it depends on your usage too and whether you've got Sky TV or other services from Virgin Media.
Jon
I only get 0.25 MPs coverage on BT, which it never gets close to, in surrey. I'm on virgin media in Leicester and it's really fast, bit pricey though

Liam
Much as I hate to admit it, Sky provide a decent basic service. If you have any of their other services, it also works out cheap.
