Guest loop skywalker
i went to both shows then the frank bruno v tim witherspoon fight straight after at the wembley stadium...what a fucking great day....i did have the thing on tape somewhere but have sadly lost it.This was the first time i had ever seen live hiphop and was definitly one of the main reasons i still love hip hop to this day..even if most of the hip hop scene is a bit shitty. Gizmo
A story for you - in 84 I went for an interview at the BBC for an engineers job. While I was there I made a trip to Groove Records in Greek Street and bought my first ever import vinyl (Techno Scratch and Play That Beat) and struck up a conversation with the guy behind the counter. We got on great and he said I should come down and see the South Bank Hip Hop Jam a few weeks later. I arrived down in London a few weeks later and basically stumbled into a hell on earth I hadn't expected. Bearing in mind that I lived in rural Yorkshire, I was taken to his flat where it soon became obvious that there was only one place to sleep - his bed, and the large collection of gay porn was somewhat unnerving too. He did have a killer record collection though. I was a little surprised to see 2 hardcore swastika wearing skinheads tonguing each other in his hallway on my arrival though. He then took me on a magical mystery tour around London including a great journey through an estate in Brixton to a flat that left me in utter despair. Basically it was a drug house where the rooms were filled with people all out of it, including an old guy that just looked like someone's Grandad. Needless to say I didn't sleep at all that night and when he went to the shops to get breakfast, I packed and legged it back to Victoria Station ASAP and missed the South Bank Jam. It was just too much for a fresh faced 18 year old to take. You know this sort of thing happens but to be thrown right into the middle of it was just sensory overload. I can still hear my dad chuckling down the phone after I begged him to pay for an early ticket home... "well I did warn you son". I came so close to witnessing the first big hip hop festival in the UK and all I'm left with is an anecdote and a great feeling of having missed something very special. Gizmo
that something special being a bumming i presume.....<{POST_SNAPBACK}>That's something I'll leave you to ponder. Morgan Khan was going to do a UK Fresh a few years back. I saw the website, saw him wheeling and dealing at DMC world finals, considered buying tickets way in advance but something stopped me... just as well as it never happened. The lineup was a who's who of classic electro acts - would've been a great show.
