  1. saul gut cheers, yeah i've already replaced a chip in one once, it's a ballache because it's got loads of legs and heat's supposedly what conks it out in the first place. the strobe lines on the platter move a bit and scratchlive wavers it between -.7 and -.8 (constantly, at least). if i speed it up til the strobe makes the line on the platter appear still, sure enough scratchlive reads 0, so it's not a problem with the platter i'd never noticed. unfortunately, i got in touch with numark and their response was basically 'fuck you'. they couldn't care less to be honest, i think basically because legally they don't have to. ethically, it's a good one, because we're increasingly moving into a society where everything is disposable and nothing's built to last- it seems odd to me that people drop hundreds of pounds on something they expect to have to replace within 5 years purely because it wears itself out, and don't complain when they do... and i think there's a vicious circle of 'get what you pay for' culture and manufacturers actually using cheap parts because people actually factor breakdowns in as part and parcel of buying something now. shame... the only things i don't like about the tech are the little bit of pitch between 33 and 45 you can't get at and the actual feel of them compared to a deck with straight arm and slightly torquier platter (although the 3.7-4.5 are almost too much to cut with sometimes). i may go for a pair. it'd be great if scratchlive could alter the pitch based on a little sum, so +8 on the tech actually pushes it to +whatever you like through the software...
  2. hm... there's a definite evolution from gta3 to san andreas, though. a lot of it is incorporating ideas and elements which were previously a whole game into the sandpit environment, like you say, but i don't think there's any doubt that the game is one of the most accomplished on any format (whether it's one of the best is a personal opinion of course). world of warcraft is quite a bit more focussed on 'exp' than gta, the stats you build in gta don't have nearly as much bearing on the game as in warcraft... i don't play wow though, i have some mates who go on for a couple of hours in a group once a week, and i saw the southpark episode (lol) but i can't extend too much wisdom on it... definitely, definitely true. i'd perhaps put half life 2 in there as well due to its physics puzzles and stuff, but 99% of stuff is interchangeable. to be fair gears isn't actually first person, and having it in that nearfield 3rd person view allows you to do the little running and taking cover thing that imo makes it so much more interesting than if they'd just made it a fps. ugh, i fucking want one. i'm gonna need some kind of windfall because my shopping list is getting huge. although that brain training winds the fuck out of me. "black. no, black. black. BLACK"
  3. yeah i agree too, although to an extent the added power of the new technology allows old ideas to be fully realised- for instance i imagine the developers of gta4 will have to compromise far less on their creative vision with the horsepower of the new gen, and i'm guessing the 'bar' for ai and immersion has been raised with gears of war but developers have wanted it since doom. i don't really keep up with gaming nowadays but it seems a bit like the huge backlash against the first batch of xbox360 games which were just moderately better looking xbox games gave developers a bit of a slap in the face and forced them to start thinking about ways to actually use the extra power available to deliver gameplay the previous gen isn't capable of. genres still have most of their superlatives rooted in the last decade, with quake3, counterstrike, streetfighter/kof, tekken, soul calibur and so on. i think that's the reason the wii's been so successful, it didn't have any competition (plus the marketing was very shrewd). at the end of the day it's boring as fuck though innit. or is that just me.
  4. i've just noticed that my ttx is running about .8% slow across the entire +/-50% range, even with quartz lock on, on all three speeds. I'm sure it hasn't always done it but i've only just noticed... it's one problem after another with these ttxs... granted they're the og ones with no vents or adjustable torque, but as soon as i get a tiny bit of cash together i'm fixing em up (one is in its box with a blown motor ic at the moment, i haven't even had a mix in months apart from at gigs and houseparties) and getting rid. think i'll go for pdx2000mk2s... or i might even bite the bullet and get technics and live with the small pitch adjustment. anyway is this a known problem?
  5. as i've said i like this bro, and you don't need to worry at all about the sound quality it sounds fine. really, really solid mixing and great and accessible track selection. and great cuts too.
  6. find "flash9.ocx" in a system folder, copy and rename the copy to "flash.ocx", should sort things.
  7. googled pages aplenty said that it's probably because a screensaver u installed uses flash and the new flash control file in flash 9 is named differently to the one it looks for but i don't know whether it's definitely that....
  8. i've got the standard 06a which i've modded to within an inch of its life (it's all bent and shit and i had to take the dustcover off to get it to fit in the housing), it cuts really close but it's really really light and the vertical travel is pretty big, so most of the time it's a swings and roundabouts thing on other faders. the cut in is usually about the same if it's a decent fader but the feel is better, or the cut in's a lot worse but the up/down movement's much smaller. i've never really got tooooo used to having a nice cut in or whatever due to cutting a lot on numark dm1050s and the like at house parties. most people i know mix on the upfaders and couldn't give a fuck about the crossfader so haven't factored its quality into the mixer at all...
  9. hi fellas, just got back in front of a computer and working internet connection for long enough to sit down and type thanks for downloading and thanks very much for the feedback lorn that is actually the sound that i wanted to come away with (the overcompressed, overdriven sound, in that madlib/dilla/dr who dat/etcetc vein), and didn't quite pull off. a lot of the tracks have completely different fx and processing signal chains woven through them because most of it was experimenting with logic and to go through and rework the lot into a more coherent fidelity using what i know now would have a) taken aaaages, and b) by its nature never gotten finished because i learn something new every day... so basically i wanted to wrap it up, put a lid on it, see what people thought, and do more stuff unfortunately i realised when i got to hull and listened to it again that there's been a wee fuck up in the export, the end of 'soulust' ends far to abruptly because an effect didn't automate properly and then the applause is shifted forward about 8 bars too far in the outro track. i think i might reup it with that fixed when i can... anyway, if anyone else has got anything to say about it i'd appreciate it ps lorn- i will have to bend your ear/send you a little premixdown bounce (if that offer still stands) soon to see how your thought process goes around your mix/master style. been forcing t.r.e.n.d. on peoples' stereos at afterarties all week and it's sounded heavy on everythinng from £5k to £5 strereos (and gone down swell too)
  10. Hi peoples, I have finally finished my EP. Please download it, and let me know what you think, through here, myspace, email, whatever. The fidelity's a bit 'basement' in parts, but if i preened it anymore I think I would literally go mental. I'm very tired tonight and going back to Hull for a week tomorrow morning, so this is actually the first and only place I'm 'promoting' it for a few days. That said, please feel free to sling it round to friends if you think it's worth it. So without further ado: CLICK TO DOWNLOAD Thanks
  11. alrite bro, this is pretty nice... as far as critisism/advice goes... erm, okay it sounds a bit flat. myspace sound is shit anyway, but it sounds like a bit of eq and compression would go a long way. another reason, i think, is because the rhythm is quite stiff. try playing as much as you can manually without quantising, and only quantise the bits that you need to give the piece that headnodding quality. as far as the structure of the track goes, i always think it's good for the music to guide the listener, and lead them to expect a change but surprise them with what the change is. some parts are very good in that respect in your track, but some parts, like the structure of the patterns coming in and out, is a bit dry. i really like when a new phrase plays so much in harmony with what is already going on, that it takes a few bars to register to you, like you did around 2 mins. that was dope. i don't really like the atmospheric drone throughout the track. the space and role it takes up could be much better replaced with something else, imo. on the whole i do like it and it's a really solid foundation for a track. if you are stuck, try making another melodic part with different instruments over a basic framework of the beat. when you've done it, a/b between the first and second effort and try to objectively see what you prefer about each one, and then consolidate the best parts into one track. it usually works for me. that, and shifting parts forward by a few beats to snap you out of a plodding rhythm you can sometimes get bogged down in. it might not necessarily sound quite right, but the chances are there will be little bits where the rhythm plays off itself and sparks a little bit of inspiration... btw, nice pants party intro, looking forward to the full thing
  12. i need to get my car boot game on i need me some old keyboards and shit too. i gotta learn to drive man... sooncome. the problem with charity shops is people from small towns of a certain age all tend to have the same shit... and it's usually kinda weak where i'm from. it does make finding something dope even nicer though. the best is when you find something nice, and some old girl wrote her name on the label and shit, and you plough through the rest of the records and just buy up her whole collection, and find out this girl had TASTE, man! and it's like, i dunno, something quite special to sit and vibe for an evening on someone you've never met before's records, who's probably dead, but that evening's on them, and there's that connection........... er... fuck was the topic again?!
  13. i don't really. unless i go to an actual second hand record store i almost never find hip hop, unless james last is hip hop and i didn't get the memo. when i dig i look for cool stuff to sample/listen to rather than stuff to play, in general.
  14. yeah i am bro... leicestershire at least. (lutterworth).
  15. quite a nice site there wax, probably won't really use it but it's nice to know it's there! there's an age concern near me that does 2 for 50p on 12s and 4 for 50p on 45s. that's what's up. then there's a leukemia research down the road that does 12s for 50p-£2. digging's no fun when you're paying above that for records is it.
  16. this is nuts. once u've cleaned up the sloppy parts (there aren't many, just a bit in the middle and the bit at the end that i noticed) it's gonna be heavy. are u going to cut on the slowed down beat? didn't realise the beat was that nice slow...
  17. aye this is pretty good mate, i like... got that psychadelic feel to it... good to hear you're making plenty of new music
  18. those guys are in the (debatably) enviable position of being able to be token hip hop djs though. people who aren't hip hop heads go down because the rumours round that they're a big deal, feel cool, go home and never go to another show in their life. then they play the 80s pop or whatever because it covers all bases: ironic scensters, eclectic scensters, people who need a bit of reassurance that they're welcome at a hip hop event, etc etc. and of course because it's the only hip hop show they'll see in their life they'll liken looping the intro to sweet dreams to the second coming. and they get paid a shiiiiitload for the gigs.
