  1. Steve - how do I take off email notifications on this thread? Only I'm getting mail every time someone replies now, which I don't really want... I tried clicking the "track this topic" link, but it only starts tracking, but doesn't stop it...
  2. Now I'm getting somewhere! I removed Avant and boom - the issue vanished. Sadly I've rebooted and reinstalled it, and the issue persists though The odd thing is that its only with Avant: not IE. If I remove Avant and click a link in Outlook, the IE browser loads super quick. My guess is still that there's a worm or something at work here, which just isn't being deleted by uninstalling Avant. The only other thing I might try now is locking down the firewall to trace ALL network activity, to see if the CPU hike coincides with any attempts to ping out etc...
  3. Hmmm - interesting. From using this Process Explorer I can see that the issue lies with anything making a call to Internet Explorer, or any program that carries an IE co-dependency (e.g. Word). So, if I load Avant (my default browser) it hangs for ages and the CPU usage rockets. If I open a link from Outlook (where it then launches Avant as its the default browser), it freezes. Basically, in Process Explorer the problem only occurs when the app in question has a handle link to IE in some way. So, I'm starting to wonder if the issue lies with a corruption of the index.dat file or something similar. Problem being, there's no easy way to reinstall IE. Reinstalling Avant certainly hasn't worked, but I didn't expect it to given its only a skin. Most odd...
  4. LOL - erm... well I had one, but then we were comfy, so I got another. Then we came back home (we being me and the missus), and I remembered I had a can of Guinness in the fridge. So, I had that. Then I remembered I had another 2 cans in the fridge... so I had those too :$ Anyways - with this problem I've found a possible means to analyse it better. It turns out Process Explorer (http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/ProcessExplorer.html) can show the historical CPU usage of DLLs - meaning I should be able to find out precisely what is making the CPU hike to 100% and then freeze. So, I'm installing it now, and fingers crossed that might lead somewhere....
  5. Buggernuts. Still no change. I fixed the stated line in Hijack This, but the PC is still running like a sack of shit. I'm reaching the point where I'm sorely tempted to try a reinstall of XP...
  6. Wordy word. I'm just gonna nip off for a calming pint (its been a long day!) and then I'll do the fix and see how it fares from there. I shall update you later mate! (Oh and I might be a bit sociable for once and swing by the main area for a chinwag too!)
  7. Nope - no duplicate instanes, and a virus check on the main explorer.exe checked out fine on that Jotti site... I'm stumped to be honest - I know its doing something when it freezes, but its a case of working out what DLLs are being accessed by explorer.exe, and how...
  8. Yup, definitely no WinNt folder. I'm searching the whole C drive now though for explorer.exes. Certainly something is happening here, because when the system freezes its because the CPU usage rockets to 100%...
  9. Tis indeed a LTNS mate! These days I'm face down in running the label, working on my own music and doing 3 radio shows, heheh. Hence, time is kinda stretched at the best of times! As regards this problem, it seems I don't have a WINNT folder either, rendering that part of the entry unnecessary. I just cannot figure out what the issue could be here - and given I used to do this for a living, I reckon that's saying something, lol. It just seems that anything involving the explorer.exe process being called from an app seems to hang the system for ages. So, it could be that clicking a weblink in Outlook, or even something simple like printing from Word to a printer on my other PC. Very, very odd indeed - and increasingly infuriating as its making doing anything bloody torturous
  10. Eaaaaaaaasy now! Any chance you could cast an eye over this mate? Only I have a bitch of a problem with my system and I'm buggered if I can fix it. In short, the PC keeps freezing up, especially when I do things that thread via Explorer.exe, like click a URL in an email to open the page on my browser. I've run Ad Aware, which found some bits but only one major malware threat, and all found items were quarantined. However, the issue persists, leaving me flummoxed. 11. Hello all, Here's a teaser for you: I got an Archos AV700 PMP for Christmas, and I'm fucking loving it. Ripping DVDs is no problem, but you have to conform to certain technical requirements. The main one of these causing me the most trouble is that the audio part of the file must be at 128k mp3, and nothing more. Now, when ripping my own DVDs that's fine; I just set it to encode the video in DivX or Xvid and stipulate a 128k CBR mp3 for the audio. BUT, when I download a movie from the web, the audio on any DivX or Xvid is invariably higher than 128k, meaning that while the video plays fine, I hear no audio. Soooo, could anyone tell me how I can re-code a DivX or Xvid video, such that the video part remains unchanged, but the audio is re-encoded to 128k mp3? I have used Dr DivX (v1.x), and right now I have a curious issue with it halving the video quality, as if its compressing and already compressed file again. Basically I was hoping there'd be an easy way to convert just the audio element to 128k MP3, but it seems otherwise. I did also try using Virtualdub, but being 100% out of my comfort zone with these progs I didn't get very far. Ideas anyone? I'd love to get these movies ready for watching on the move... thanks!
  12. I've been reading this thread with a fair bit of interest and amusement, though ultimately I can't deny I land on the same side as Lamont and 2tall when it comes to my feelings on this. Ultimately though this is quite a gamble for DMC. Agreed it could make previous champs come out the woodwork to battle again, but in all honesty it seems to me that those who have been there have realised that DMC is perhaps not the golden ticket people often perceive it to be. Sure, it can open doors, but from what I've seen even the DJ agencies are getting less impressed with it as a title. I just hope people don't labour under any illusion that this is good for the DJ community. It isn't; its a contest being finally bought out lock, stock and barrel, thereby ensuring its credibility is permanently compromised. But, DMC have now laid their cards on the table, and it is a risky move in some senses - particularly where this equipment usage clause is. If people want to enter with their 05s for example, DMC will be telling Vestax to cough up for sponsorship. Problem is, Vestax and DMC do NOT see eye to eye at all, and therefore its highly likely that Vestax will simply tell them to fuck off. If that's the case, where does this leave the DJs trying to compete? I have to be honest though: its been a couple of years since I gave a shit who won DMC anyway (and I suspect I'm not the only one there), although I will confess to being made up to see Muzzell win this year, purely because I've loved his style since he first turned up at Needlework some 2 years back. But DMC is not the all-hallowed win anymore. Its not even where most people seem to be looking for their inspiration as regards the tablist artform. On a wider level though, I just hope people see things as they really are, and take note that you build your own foundations in this life. Lamont isn't known to me because he battled. He's known to me because he created and released some great scratch records, and has now caught my ear even further with his collab EP with 2tall. Likewise with 2tall: its not his battle skills that got him where he is now - it was his production and creative skills. Both those guys are examples of people who haven't waited for things to come to them: they've gotten on regardless and have committed themselves to the long haul of working to build a rep. Its a crude analogy, but sometimes DMC seems like the X-Factor to me; its people trying to take the shortcut to the top and then wondering why, when they get there, shit isn't really happening for them.

    Marcus B?

Marcus is the fucking MAN. I've got all his mixes apart from Superior Cynic, and they're all fucking classics. The one that's permanently eluded me though is Neptune Walker, which was one of his "creative pieces" (as I think he termed them) in the vein of Sunshine Ambassador and Catastrophic Mush. I've been trying for ages to track the guy down too - hell if I could I'd sign his ass to Needlework in a shot. Shame he's always eluded me!
  14. On a vaguely related note: listen out for the January edition of Turntable Radio, as there should be a MMM interview on there. Laurent hooked up with him last night and by all accounts it was a pretty cool interview.

    NEEDLEWORK

Dee - we've now moved to http://www.needleworkrecords.com with a new site and store etc. Cheers for the support though - its always much appreciated.
  16. Well, not remove IE per se - more "how to make IE invisible to XP, so that it points all calls and shell commands to your browser of choice"... http://crackbaby.com/article.php?sid=10093
