  1. Hello !

Name's Josh and I've been cutting for 'bout five weeks by now -

well, actually about five years but i'm still rubbish on account of my goldfish-like attention span.

I have a solid background in sound engineering and music tech so please feel free to ask, but don' be upset if I don't know the answer !

In my spare time I like shooting germans on my computer.

  2. I use Ms Pinky ( www.mspinky.com ) which works more like serato as it uses physical position stamps rather than timecode. its $99 and it fuckin rocks. You need a soundcard to go with it (like a delta 44 @ £150) and phono preamps ( £20) if you don't have TTXs.

Also you can scratch video with it simultaneously. fisting, squirting and combat vids will never be the same.

  3. I think HTF pressed up a load about 4 years ago now ...

Covers look 100% orig but while label vinyl ... I sold about 5 of them a while back ... I got more than you paid for them 2nd ... I would also say they was a bargin !!!

    Ohh you bugger !

I inherited a couple of electros - (can't remember what volumes, but i do remember a track called 'stick up kid') from my cousin who got knocked down by a car :s when i was about six. I think I sold them at a boot sale when I was 11 :52_52:

Didn't get back into electro until I was 19 - and it took me fuckin ages to find Rockit again on a decent pressing.

  4. I use :

Carillon AC1 core 5 'nearly' (no raid array)

    EMU 1820M soundcard

    Waldorf Pulse Synth

    Access Virus C Synth

    Virsyn Tera 2 Synth

    Line 6 Echo Pro

    Line 6 Filter Pro

    Native Instruments Kontakt

    Reason ( very occasionally)

    plugin effects and stuff

'Beat Creating' is a pretty vague term these days - if you want to flip breaks then phatmatik pro (a VSTi) is your man. If you're looking to create tracks from scratch with maybe a few samples thrown in then fruity loops or reason is what you should be looking at, though i would recommend reason over fruity. there are demos of both on the net so make up your own mind.

An elegant, but expensive and limited solution is the all pervasive Akai MPC series. But you're asking about software, so I'm guessing you've already decided this isn't for you !

If you just want to program beats in software then Native Instruments battery isn't a bad idea (£99) but that's really all it does. An Akai Mpd controlller (£149) to go with it wouldn't be a bad idea.

  5. I could build better for that money. It doesn't cost a lot, especially if you order certain parts from the USA where everything is loads cheaper. As I said, I wouldn't touch it. Fuck pre-bought computers, they're usually shit.

i defer to your knowledge on this one, i don't really keep up to date with component prices and system prices. Again, if you're buying a comp for music i'd really steer clear of Vaios.

PS2 and XBox are "OK" for games, but they won't run the only games that are worth playing right now and they won't keep upwith a PC and a good GFX card.

word. You get all the cutting edge PC games 2-3 years later and then you get to run them in TV screen resolution. and then you you have to split that up if you want to play multiplayer. and if you play multiplayer you can see everyone else's screen ! :'(

  6. If it's for music, then i'd give it a miss. I've had loads of customers have problems with external soundcards and software on sony vaios. Even though they are marketed as multimedia computers they seem to be really flaky in terms of music making in my experience.

    nice spec for £600 though.

  7. quick comparison chart type thingy:

    Midiman Oxygen 8

Around £90, 2 octaves, 8 controller knobs, no memories, USB connection.

    Evolution MK425c

Around £85, 2 octaves, 8 controller knobs, keypad, 10 configuration memories, USB connection.

    Edirol PCR30

Around £120, 2 1/2 octaves, 8 controller knobs, 8 sliders, 10 config memories, USB connection.

  8. get an edirol pcr30 or if you're feeling cheap, an evolution mk425.

both of these allow you to save your knob/slider assignments whereas the m-audio ones don't so you have to go and re-assign everytime you want to use it. the key action on the pcr30 feels much nicer than the other two brands as well (cos it's Roland).
