don't really get what you mean by the "gap" you have to work your upfader harder i've found, ie. it's more of a elongated movement, but you should still be able to get tight sounding cuts, juts need a few quiet nights in!

Reason provides a great stepping stone to use a professional product. I personally dont like Abelton too much so I'm biased. I suppose if our running to a budget, licencing costs will be a major major factor, especially if you only have 10k! No, in a word! I had Beta version of 3, you can def. record live midi and there's new mastering tools buit thats about it really.
