  1. sorry to hear about that. whenever i loose stuff i remember this quotation from a forgotten wise man: "you own nothing that you can't loose in a shipwreck" if you get bored of baked beans then add a bit of curry powder, and fry them up a bit, it's tasty as fuck.
  2. thats pretty kosher for a controller, but thing about it folks, would you rather see a pianist playing a grand piano, or a pianist playing a keyboard with a really good piano synth that sounded so good that you couldn't tell the diference between it and a real piano? the other day i saw a street performer who was playing a real grand piano in the square, he had mad skills no doubt, but the really amazing thing was that he'd actually bothered to take a real piano into the square. it was fucking amazing. if he had a decent digital stage piano and an amplifier you wouldn't have been able to tell the difference in the sound, such is the state of the art in music tech these days, but fuck, he actually travels around europe in a van with a piano! even if they come out with a digital turntable that makes the exact same sounds as a real turntable, it'll still be more interesting to see somebody playing with real decks. i suspect that moving a piano is much more of a pain in the ass than cleaning the fluff from you needles every so often and making three trips to the car when you go to a gig.
  3. i was about to reccomend farnell and rs too, before rasteri got here... the only other one worth mentioning is digikey. any maybe ebay. if you like fleamarkets you can sometimes find an old mixer covered in retro style knobs for next to nothing
  4. that is excessive to the point of genius!
  5. for usb on avrs check this out: http://www.fourwalledcubicle.com/LUFA.php lufa already has class compliant midi, so no drivers needed!
  6. say something that lets them know youv'e already done loads of gigs like this and that if they hire you then you won't waste their time with stupid problems. then offer to suck them off.
  7. the reason why you were told not to mix wit the gain knobs is this: the mixer channel built is like this: input-->gain-->eq-->line fader--> cross fader--> main out. the workflow that its designed for is: 1: put on a new track 2. adjust gain knob untill the vu meter sits at arround 0dB 3. adjust eq to taste.and maybe the gain again if needed. 4. mix with line faders and crossfader. your eq's response probably isn't completely linear over different volume levels. they are probably cabilbrated so that a +6dB boost on the eq is realy +6dB when the signal is 0dB coming out of the gain stage. if the signal out of the gain stage is e.g -3dB then you might only be getting +5.5dB of boost from the eq, even though it is set to +6dB, or it might be 6.5dB depending on exacly how the eq is build, on a decent mixer the differences are probably smaller than this though. in real life you'd be hard pressed to tell the differnce, even with a spectrum analyser and a pair of golden ears. i say bollox to the orthodox fascists who say you shouldn't mix with the gain knobs and don't even know why!
  8. i'm having a break from life today. i have my dvs set up with y-cables that i made myself. it works perfectly, no noticable signal loss. i switch from dvs to vinyl with the line/phono switch. no problems! the only drawback is that you can't transform wit the line/phono switch when youre scratching with the dvs if you can't be bothered to make your own y-cables you could just use phono y-adapters though. i use xwax though not traktor. so your results may vary. acording to this page you should be able to use thru mode though. http://www.native-instruments.com/en/products/traktor/dj-audio-interfaces/traktor-audio-6/overview/details-setup-examples/
  9. how does this work? i was thinking about how this could be done on a numark ttx (i'll probaly never find the free time to do this though). the simple way would be a digital potentiometer controled by an arduino. connected thus pitch pot--->arduino--->digipot--->turntable pcb. with the arduino in the middle it would be possible to add midi in either as midi note on messages or control changes. it would also be possible to quantize the pitch pot into steps corresponding to notes. is that what youre doing or are you using something specific to the pdx? is that an arduino mega? if you use an arduino leonardo or a teensy usb board then you can add usb midi quite easily. 60 euro seems like a good price though, since apart from the parts cost you've got a lot of other costs like pcb production, and general logistics to take care of. not to mention support. nice work!
  10. i don't have an iphone but making a looper is probably the easiest thing you could possibly do, software development wise. its pretty much "hello world" for audio. you could quite easily make one just by copying and pasting example code. i'm personaly not so keen on loopers, so i havent bothered to make an android looper yet, but maybe one day i'll find myself with nothing whatsoever to do for a few days.
  11. firefox with downloadhelper? (on linux) is the only thing i ever needed, never saw a hd video on facebook though.
  12. relative mode means the only direction and speed is used, absolute means that the position is read too. if you make a loop at 133.33bpm then it become skipless because the sample is repeating exactly one every revolution of the record, i don't have traktor but these are true for all DVS system.
  13. read this about 24/96 before parting with your cash. http://people.xiph.org/~xiphmont/demo/neil-young.html 24/96 isnt a magic bullet.
  14. nice, lots of oldskool nostalgia moments! if you’re not using dvs i'm totally jealous of your record collection!
  15. the behringer is pretty good, works without hassles and doesn’t need drivers, i know loads of people who have them and nobody complained. works on linux mac and windows. has a built in phono preamp too. you should be fine with the behringer. its only 16bit 48khz, but thats good enough for what you need to do. at that price its pretty hard to beat too., the only odd thing about it is that the input is hardwired to the output so you cant use it as a software effects processor, or a dvs. you can however mod it by cutting a trace on the pcb. this will probably never be an issue for you though. when i was putting together my xwax setup i spent ages reading stuff about soundcards before settling on a mixvibes umix44, which cost about 100 euros. no preamps though so it probably won't suit you. there are a few other similar soundcards out there like the american audio vms4 which do have a phono preamp on one channel.
  16. let your personality choose your compact usb audio card! play this fun game to decide the perfect audio interface for you! miserly scrooge cheapskate. http://www.ebay.com/itm/USB-SOUND-CARD-AUDIO-ADAPTER-FOR-DESKTOP-LAPTOP-NOTEBOOK-COMPUTER-PC-/230916899108?pt=US_Sound_Card_External&hash=item35c3b84124&autorefresh=true wannabe deejay http://www.numark.com/product/stereoio anti fashion utilitarian http://www.behringer.com/EN/Products/UFO202.aspx hipster http://apogeedigital.com/products/duet2.php serious audiophile with 24ct gold ears http://dhost.info/mhdtlab/stockholm2.htm overly serious gear whore http://www.rme-audio.de/en_products_babyface.php nerd http://www.hardsid.com/hardsid_4u.php mad scientist http://teledynelecroy.com/oscilloscope/oscilloscopeseries.aspx?mseries=48 have fun and don't forget to post you personality type and send this email to all you facebook contacts, if you don't you'll never have sex again!
  17. and recording them into the computer to use in a dvs?
  18. these things are the shit! http://www.stuffandthings.co.uk/pa.htm but not cheap though, i have one of these: http://www.shonner.it/catalog.aspx?cid=3997&mid=5214 if you go to a guitar shop they'll have a battery powered amp for about 150quid. but really the simplest thing is to use a powered pa speaker and an inverter attatched to a car battery, your going to need 220v for the turntable anyway. inverters are cheap and one of you will already have a pa speaker and a car battery. you'll be able to run for a few hours on a regular car battery. car batteries are big and heavy and you need to be carefull not to spill the electrolyte (which is sulfuric acid) at maplin they sell sealed lead acid gel batteries which is what most busker amps use.
  19. nice pics but i still don't understand how they manage to make the control vinyls so fucking warped.. they must stack them on the edge next to the radiator i suppose. just grumbling i suppose, i have 5 control vinyls and only two of them are so bent that i can't juggle with them without putting the needle halfway through the reccord.or using relative mode.
  20. no problem dopp , i was away from home this week so i wouldn't have answered your email anyway., tell me how much it weighs and i'll try to find out, i can't imagine it being much more than 20€ looked at the djtech mixer, but: no line switches, no headphone master monitor. the dvs switch feature is neat, but i alredy have my dvs set up with y cables so it won't make a big difference for me. as soon as innofader mini's become available as spares i'll get one and mod it to fit the 05 pro
  21. sold! fantastic, i love broken stuff! i'll send you a p.m. with my email address, and we'll get it sorted! thanks!
  22. i need a spare mixer for when people come round for a scratch, i already have a decent scratch mixer (sk2f) but all i want is a cheap box with a decent crossfader. i've played with "la barra" which is pretty cool, but not so cheap. the cheapest "real" scratch mixer i've seen is the numark M2 which costs about 120 Euros. i have serious doubts about its crossfader though. has anybody ever put a focus fader in a shitty chinese mixer? maybe i could upgrade to an innofader and re-use the focus fader from my sk2f. alternativly are there any diy scratch box electronics projects out there? i can electronics.
