  1. So after 20 years of watching DMC's I finally said I should get a routine together. I had been practising for a while but stopped to prepare for my wedding (i know, priorities right?) then had a look a couple of days ago and saw the deadline is Tuesday! It's too late to get any votes but after practising a fair bit I thought it a shame not to record something anyway so rushed this one this weekend. There's some sloppy parts but I definitely have a new found respect for the pros at this who make it look so easy! Please vote here before voting ends Tuesday 24th May http://www.dmcdjonline.com/view/qSrvvSYbYD/

  3. wow, what does that mean? (sorry Traktor noob here , as you know ;-)
  4. I like the sound of the tapped ones, but when I try to go at any speed it always reverts back to a pinch motion
  5. You're not wrong, that BF trailer is mega!
  6. an "ahhhh" & "fresh" powered drone.... definitely not me, I barely cut anymore sadly!
  7. there's clearly a DV drone out on some kind of "scratch reconnaissance" mission
  8. Lot of new people joining the forum and posting scratch vids, be good if some more add themselves to the map
  9. good idea for a thread, i'll be interested in the responses here....If I've thought it could lead to a cool regular spot or music i'd really enjoy playing or a favour to someone I've done it for free or very little, or if it was a good opportunity. I don't play out so much now but when I was playing out quite a bit I was only doing very underground hip hop in a small town which really couldn't command much of a fee and I accepted that. However if I'm doing a more mainstream set or adjusting to the crowd I'd ask a bit more, but then again how often is anyone asked to "name their price"? (amateurs I mean)...most places had a set rate for everyone (or so they told me). A lot of people might say to a promoter well I'm bringing all this kit along I'll want paying for it, in my experience that just doesn't work...a lot of clubs couldn't care less if you're playing songs off an iPod, why would they pay more cos you're using Turntables behind a screen that no one could see, sad state of affairs but probably true...(i'm sure there's promoters out there who do recognise a good DJ from someone playing songs of course). I'd say there's def a lot of value in building a rep locally as a reliable and entertaining DJ, willing to play to the crowd and not just coming with his/her own agenda and building a good set of contacts and raising your fee accordingly as it goes on.... I think you definitely have to have an idea in your head what your time is worth versus you're other commitments, and tier that depending on whether it's a free entry bar or paid entry nightclub etc and work from that figure. Then try to think what they're taking in on the night versus how many other staff there are (other DJs, promoters, bar staff, doormen etc and base your profit/mark up on that I guess.... I don't mean it in a real complicated calculation way but for example if you're the only DJ doing a 10-2am slot at a club taking in £10k on a sat night, I don't think it's unreasonable to ask for a fair whack for example... I'm sure I haven't said anything you didn't know already (probably completely unhelpful answer) but hopefully it's a help for anyone just starting out....it's really just a hobby for me, would be a different game if I had to pay my rent from it of course...
  10. hated the prospect of telling nightclub staff I couldn't get equipment working before sets, the more I tried to do with Traktor the more this phobia grew so I stayed away from it and stuck with serato! I think this is more down to my inadequacies with MIDI mapping as so many people swear by it but weirdly consoling (for want of a better word) that it happens to the best of them too!
  11. big fan of this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Smk8hVid11Y
  12. I've gone for Dubba as I thought he incorporated a lot of different techniques into the 1m30... there are so many uber technical cutters in this one it's been really impressive but I've always found getting the variety without mistakes is the one of the hardest things imo Also agree would've been good to have more than one vote or a 1,2,3 vote as too many great vids! (Sy & Alex Nozop prob my 2 & 3) Don't know how easy that is to incorporate tho...
  13. Cheers dude. Not for calling me a number two, but for the mixtape comment. This was definitely a concious decision - I've been talking about how I'd like to put together a kind of classic 90s style multi tracked mixtape type thing out of my own beats, augmented with samples, vocals, cuts, etc. Once I realised that all I had really for this beat was a drums and bass loop and that I was going to augment it with cuts, I was totally imagining this to be like the beginning of a mixtape. I really SHOULD make it one day! Sounds good mate!
  14. Haha, true! I got £300 in the end on eBay which was pretty close to what I wanted but during that time saw them going from £200 upwards in good nick
  15. Ahh just sold my 909 with innfoader, could have kept it in the SSS family!
  16. Prime Cuts & Smirs come to mind when I think of the "pinch" style, and if I've understood pinch style right I was doing them till Yoshi tore my technique apart (in the nicest possible way) and got me to do them his way -1m27s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xGacXsqFWcc#t=1m27s one of the scratch beasts on here pls correct me if I'm wrong but I guess the advantage of the latter is that you can slow down or speed up your clicks accordingly and switch between 2,3 + depending on how many you want to do? when trying to describe pinching style the only thing that came to mind is trying to squeeze a stress ball twice in really quick succession, probably the quickest way to tendonitis!
  17. Are you able to do triples through a beat for 1-2 minutes straight? You should be comfortable enough just tripling for an indefinite amount of time, without even looking (stickers don't really matter for chases). If you can do that at the tempo of the Funky Drummer beat, he is using Reprise btw, then you should be able to do them like Rob. The only tricky part is going straight into them cleanly from nothing, whereas if you do them for a minute say, you can adjust and clean them up if they're sloppy for a couple bars. Really appreciate the input guys! Do you mean what Ruftone is doing at 0:50 secs here for example - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1bMj9N8yz7I#t=0m50s I'm quite comfortable with chasers with pauses normally but not clean enough doubling up the fader movements, I'll catch the sounds maybe only one in every 4 or 5 attempts say. Agreed no need to look at stickers for those... If what Rob is doing is just based on these chasers that's relatively straightforward then, maybe as you say the sounds he's using make it sound more interesting. The arm movements are very similar though. I hadn't really thought about it ever but not considered this as tripling
  18. Alright, hopefully I got it now....having trouble catching it cleanly ( I think I completely miss one stab sound here but nothing else I did to post was any better), hopefully that will come with practise. Incidentally this is with my pitch right down as slow as possible (as one is a 1200), so I'm still a bit perplexed as to how Rob's catching them cleanly at normal speed.... I'm starting here with the first stab on my left deck going to the first kick (after the first stab) on the right, that's about the only way I got a similar sounding technique...
