  1. I want to add a shout out to DJ Focus as well...his ripples were part of the inspiration for this technique as I could never replicate ripples due to being a natural lefty and this tech although different falls under that family of techniques that texturize sound when scratching.
  2. The Double Clover Tear https://www.dropbox.com/s/g4snpxxepxdztzt/The%20Double%20Clover%20Scratch.m4a?dl=0 So after much work/play with this technique I finally decided to 'post a fyle' of a new/rare scratch technique. Well perhaps it isn't new (hence the potential 'rare' title) but I have searched around and in my 25 years scratching have not really heard anything like this...so let's begin shall we? The 'traditional' Clover Tear was created/popularized by Dj QBert of course and is at this age of scratching, somewhat common. 2 forward tears immediately followed by 2 reverse tears. TECHNIQUE AND APPLICATION/THOERY The main differences in the Double Clover are simple and obvious...4 tears forward + 4 tears backward! The catch is that it is virtually impossible to achieve this at speed with traditional tears as they are simply not varied or fast enough to achieve the sound in question. The solution to this is by using 'hand waves' or as some here have called 'bumpy knuckles'. I find the terms 'hand waves' or 'wave tears' or perhaps even 'segmented waves' is a touch more appropriate as it is the oscillation (wave) that really defines each tear and gives an oscillation in pitch not otherwise achievable via traditional tear methods using hand/forearm in a push/pull method. The audio file above starts with the traditional 2/2 clover tear...first I start slowly and then at speed...then quickly changes to 4/4 with some 3/4 and a couple of 2/4 just to show how variation applies to bpm and time signature depending on the beat/rhythm....then I ended with some random click placement just to illustrate some potential I find facinating... 4/4 clover tears = 8 sounds...depending on how many times you click...you can esentially have 16 sounds in less than one bar of a 4/4 measure! What this means is that this is not simply ONE scratch but when used correctly is an system/style of scratching that allows for immediate speed increases and relatively untapped scratch possibilities than I really thought were possible. The most difficult part about this scratch was the forward waves moving seamlessly into the reverse waves...they feel un-natural until you start to think of this technique as ONE movement rather than 4 forward / 4 reverse. Having said that you may find that trying to get around learning the forward wave tears cannprove slightly more difficult due to not having platter resistance like you would doing this technique in reverse. Anyhow, I just wanted to share what I've been messing with. I will post a full video soon but thought this was a good start to get people going... - V
  3. There's a few main things that will greatly improve your scratching. #1 - Hand *flexibility* exercises rather than *strengthening* exercises. This is especially true with record control and within that even more true when it comes to more complex movements. #2 - Visualization of scratching while AWAY from your turntables. Progress of skills in sports has been shown to improve in studies where participants spent time thinking of their technique (scratching in your mind) rather than just rote exercise where you are just developing muscle memory and not actually developing an actual conceptual understanding of any technique. #3 - Slow and steady wins the race...meaning start with your most comortable SLOW tempo beat you can cut to and only increase tempos if you can EASILY achieve a pattern/technique at your current tempo you are learning at. Speed comes over time...dont expect this to happen quickly...takes months/years and is always a constant battle of refinement. #4 - NEVER compare yourself to others! Progress in any art is personal and the only person you need compare against yourself when it comes to progress is...YOU. Progress can halt or regress if studying/admiring others too often...make your goal to be better than the version of you last week/month/year. Some people have natural adeptness in learning or executing scratching...for example I'm left hand dominant on the record and have always had to work harder at fader speeds than control for this reason...but you may have a different path or level and that is PERFECTLY ok! That's all for now...just try to keep it fun and progress will just seem like play rather than work and happen faster in the long run.
  4. Thanks guys! Was on my bucket list to hold a DMC title before 40...success!
  5. Also huge thumbs up for Anderson Paak...especially the "No Worries" project he did with KNXWLEDGE....that shit is bananas....some of the best music I've heard in recent memory.
  6. Yeah I really can't be mad at that at all...thanks man!
  7. Thanks guys for the kind words! Finished 3rd but got two 1st place votes from Eprom & Netik...can't really be mad at that. Props to Wunderkut for the win!
  8. Thanks man! Its just the one round unfortunately ... fingers crossed!
  9. Thanks to Vekked for hosting the IDA Online Scratching for Canada this year. Here's my entry! https://vimeo.com/190336649
  10. Fully recommend Adobe Premiere if you are on Mac...it's as pro as you could ask for and affordable if you decide to buy a sub to Adobe CC. Otherwise if you want something a bit more template friendly try Final Cut Pro X....doesn't take as much knowledge to get good efx/looks out of footage and has tons of pre made transitions etc.
  11. What the fuck? That's just despicable.
  12. You know you're supposed to turn the power to the platter OFF right?

The most ironic thing is a lot of battle dj's have been saying for years that we need to be respected as MUSICIANS and that the turntable is an INSTRUMENT....Brace does exactly that and people complain? Dude deserves a medsl for making actual music in the face of so many poorly executed/planned routines. Just sayin.
  15. I don't practice like when I was younger but when I cut now its a balance of just vibing out and freestyling or dedicated sharpening of old/new skills to add to the arsenal. As far as gigging....I did a ton of solo/band scratch based shows from 2003-2008 but got married in 2009 and really dedicated myself to video/editing work around then too and I virtually all but stopped scratching for almost 2-3 years. Having said that now I cut a couple times a week depending on how busy I get with work/life but feel sharper than ever and love it even more than I used to.
  16. Damn, that was a great level of cuts from so many people! Big up to my personals favs this battle...Dub and Sy really smashed it and I honestly got inspired to even enter in the first place because of their entries. Sick flows and toiggght technique. I look forward to sexual health advice from Erik and whatever amazing CNP prize awaits!
  17. Shout out to Sparky T! This was fun to do, respect to everybody who entered.
  18. I'm looking forward to cut man doo's video. 👊
  19. Random pattern I stumbled on...as best I can explain its a 2-click to clean up a reverse progressive stepped scribble. Kind of a 'cheat' style but it just sounds kinda crazy.
  20. Thanks Dub! Man I just watched yours again. That shit was noiiiiiiiice.
  21. Got off my ass and did up a entry. Some really good takes from people already...this is gonna be a good one.
  22. He used Beard trimmings and Maple Syrup.
  23. The tilting mixer bling effect was just pure luck of having a pin spotlight overtop of Vekked. We never intended for it but I decided to highlight it cause hey it just looked really cool! @rock well - we cleaned the decks and mixer first take and after that it was useless to keep trying to stop Vekked from eating Fried Chicken and ruining everything....ok maybe I just ran out of wipes to clean it each take but I like MY story better.
