  1. We're talking about two different things. If I just wanna cut a battle record over a beat from my laptop or something then I only need a regular old interface. I don't need the DVS unless I want to manipulate the audio from the laptop. I'm saying maybe I don't feel like investing a bunch of money in a DVS setup just yet. Perhaps I should start with a cheap old mixer like a Rane 56 and a standard issue used USB 2.0 interface-- then if I decide I want to spend on a full DVS setup down the road I'll just replace the interface with a DVS. I don't understand - what's the "reasonably priced audio interface" for? If you want to play digital audio from your laptop, you need a DVS (Serato, Traktor etc). It can built in to the mixer, or standalone. The DVS box IS your audio interface.
  2. I just scored the deal of the century from a guy who is relocating abroad in 2 weeks and had to fire sale all his shit on Craigslist: $500 for 2 Stanton STR8-150's in immaculate condition, aftermarket cloth dust covers, a pair of flight cases for the tables, 4 brand new cartridges with head shells, and a pair of butter rugs to boot.
  3. Ideally I want something good but affordable that I can upgrade/extend later on. Maybe I'll just buy a regular old mixer and a reasonably priced audio interface to replace down the road with a Serato box. Other than the Rane 56 are there good used mixers to consider? Ecler and Rodec have historically been hard to come by in the US. A&H is around but I've never gotten my hands on one. Not a fan of the fader in the Pioneer 707/909 but maybe I could replace it with an Innofader or whatever. Believe it or not I actually miss my old Tascam XS-8... wouldn't mind one of those with an Innofader.
  4. I haven't had any gear in a while but I came across some tables for sale at a price I couldn't refuse, so I bought them today. Now I need a mixer. Even back when I was actively dj'ing I never really got into using what was then SSL. I see now there's a bunch of new software and hardware around, and since I never used Serato back when I don't really know what I'm looking at now. I've gathered that I'll probably want either: Any mixer + USB interface + Serato DJ Pro + Control vinyl or Rane 61/62 + Control Vinyl + (Maybe a copy of Serato DJ Pro if the software license won't transfer when buying the mixer second-hand). Is that about right? Price wise I figure option 1 is $350 for a Rane 57SL + $200-$300 for something like a used Denon DS1 or a Rane interface and some control vinyl. OTOH, Option 2 is around $600 for a Rane 61, provided I can find one with a transferable DJ Pro license. Am I missing any good options?

  6. Ever have one of those moments where you're listening to a song and all of a sudden you think, "Holy shit. That's where the sample came from?" Who can pick it out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TEg_Uw7rB3g
  7. What exactly is the difference between the Core 2 Quads and the Quad core xeons?
  8. Ah, I see the model numbers refer simply to speed. So, for running Photoshop, will I be better off with a single 3200 or two 26-somethings?
  9. Ok, so I'm looking into buying a new desktop. I'll be using it primarily for Photoshop and some web-design related work. I've been thinking about going mac but I don't think I can justify the cost. There are far cheaper refurb alternatives in the PC market. First thing's first. I want POWER. I'm accustomed to doing my work on a quad G5 w/ 8 gigs of ram. That said, I've been looking at quad-core Xeon pc's. But I have no idea what I'm looking at. The processors models boggle me, and when I try to look them up I just get a bunch of other tech jargon I don't understand. Like what's the difference between the 2000 series and 3000 series? Can anyone lay out for me what some basic differences are in current multi core and multi-processor systems and what I should be looking for processor-wise?
  10. Who remembers Sir Scratch flicking the record while the William Tell overture played? Those were the good old days.
  11. Yep. You bought a POS. Sorry. I'd recommend Panasonic or Nikon (Nikon has significant shutter lag, which can be annoying). Cameras are one of those times when buying a brand name actually matters. Sorry. You kinda fucked yourself on this one. edit: and that was a cute but unnecessarily long story.
  12. I was using the GT's for a while. They were great, actually. Dunno why they were discontinued.
  13. This is just the plain old 1601. 1601s is the one with the samples, 1601e with the effects. In any event it seems to be a damn good price for anyone looking at them. http://cgi.ebay.com/Urei-1601-Battle-Mixer...1QQcmdZViewItem
  14. yeah what happened to all the late 90's battling cats? P-Trix Develop Infamous Smbdy (his 98 juggle where he dropped the "The Boy is Mine" sample is still the best routine drop ever)
  15. Aretha Franklin D'Angelo Stevie Wonder Ray Charles Norah Jones Ella Fitzgerald Etta James Otis Redding Marc Broussard Just to name a few
  16. And then maybe you can tag your name onto the thing you hold up for your mugshot.
  17. Damn. Don't get arrested dude. But nice stuff indeed.
  18. except you aren't really going to be doing a whole lot with the fader while pressing buttons.
  19. In all honestly, you'll probably neef a new hard drive. As hard as it might be to believe, the file structure problems that might keep your computer from booting into windows rarely happen on their own, or even as the result of some sort of spy/malware. In my experience they're almost always caused by disk failure.
  20. I think the whole thing is a pretty fruitless endeavor. Yes, it widens the range of tones that one can produce on cue with a turntable, but short of ditching the platter altogether in favor of a table full of buttons, melodic solo compositions won't ever come close to touching anything that can be produced with a classic instrument.
  21. When that happened to me, I ran checkdisk a couple times, which fixed the problem temporarily. However, the constant rebooting problem was due to a broken hard drive, which had to be replaced.
  22. xander wins cutest dog, hands down.
  23. There's no speaking to the ruck. He's far too stubborn and arrogant. All this turntable revolution crap is utter bullshit. Big fucking deal if you have pitch presets I say.
