When I think of 80s Boogie this sort of thing comes to mind.

Most of it is a bit plastic sounding to me..but some of it I can listen too,my missus likes that sort of music a lot..I have to play stuff like this for her on a saturday night usually hehe but I eventually switch it up to more Funk based stuff like this.

This is much more my kinda thing though.

I like the Funk served raw, thanks.

funny this topic came up since i was just digging thru my records looking for some funky stuff. I think boogie is almost a blend of disco and funk. but maybe more disco than funk.

Yeah, pretty much - it's a fusion of the two, I think. Not sure it's one more than the other - just depends on the record. But it's stuff aimed squarely at the dancefloor. When it's the funkier end, I really like it.

I love some of the 80's funk stuff, from the time you're describing. I dunno if its classed as Boogie, but theres some dope tunes that have that "everybody has limitless cocaine credit" vibe to them.

I'm thinking Rick James, Luther Vandross, Teena Marie, Mtume, and this killer track:

def not bogie vibes though right?

Dan, if you don't already have Holy Ghost on 12" it's definitely worth the purchase. That one never fails to slay.

Yeah- that Holy Ghost 12 is baad to the bone JB!

The Bar Kays are dope,i have quite a bit of that stuff..the 'Black Rock' lp is probably my favourite of thiers..damn good.

Anyway,I'm glad Jel has started this topic as this now means that I can post all the dope ass shit I keep sticking up in 'The Greatest Saturday Night Funk Tracks' thread that nobody ever reads!

This one is right on the cusp from 1980.

So I guess it falls somewhere in between Funk and Boogie.

More Boogie style vibes but from a little earlier ,1976 but definitely has that flavour.

Ouch Dan! Those last two...

Hahaha.. I never said those tracks were any good though..they just have that Boogie vibe going down!

Just drink a few white wine spritzers on a Friday night and they'll sound marvellous probably!

Most 80s boogie stuff leaves me a little cold TBH. I guess its the disco-ness of it all.

80s funk however I have so much time for!

Ok,so that's an interesting point - 80s funk and 80s boogie - different or the same?

I always saw boogie as the funkier end of disco but not sure I could make much of a distinction between that and some of the 80s funk stuff.

80s boogie - Evelyn Champagne King, D-Train?

80s funk - Rick James, Cameo?

Ah, you misunderstand sir! I meant I really like both of those tracks. I could have worded it better, I suppose.

When its done well, it's great.

[Nerd Alert] Isn't it retrospective term, with the artists making RnB/Funk/Disco music some of which was later termed boogie?

Yes, I believe it was. I think the term originated in the UK to describe that type of black dance music coming out of the US in the early 80s. Disco was tainted by that point so people didn't want to describe it as that. Uk DJ Greg Wilson has an excellent history of it at this site: http://www.electrofunkroots.co.uk

Boogie..Go Go..Funk or Disco?

Who knows..

https://youtu.be/DD0IR3NzJYY

bustin loose is go-go.

Yeah, I know..I was just messing around.

Hehe-I've owned a copy of Bustin' Loose since the mid 80's...it's a great tune and Chuck Brown is of course considered the Godfather of Go-Go music.

I really liked the bands Defunkt and Trouble Funk too back then.

The Soul Searchers also recorded the one and only Ashleys Roachclip !

I know people from my neck of the woods would always consider Go-Go its own thing, and complain that it should have taken off but never did. It's really the drums and live format that give it away. You used to be able to walk around DC and there were always drum crews with buckets/trashcans/pots/pans busking.

Check out Jayquan's lesson on Trouble Funk.
