Steve
Many people believe it's this: - Freddy Fresh thinks it's this: - There are several other contenders released in 1979 with nobody really sure of what was released exactly when. Would you say that this is a rap record though? It was released in 1968: - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lpAX8MYS86Q
doppelkorn
I always thought it was King Tim III but that Pigmeat Markham one my mum had on 45 I think. I'm sure she had some Pigmeat Markham. To be fair you can find loads of songs from the 60s which have a poem read over a beat. Is that a "rap" record? http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Who_had_the_first_rap_song_and_what_year For my money the first good rap record was Rappers' Delight. A lot of them 15 minute joints have really tired rhymes. To be fair though early rap music didn't lend itself to being recorded! Death Mix Live anyone? Matt3r
I hear d King Tim III but then there's always the last poets, they first released an lp in '70, "Chastisement" from '73 sticks in my mind though
doppelkorn
It's tricky to say because if you've got someone rapping over an instrumental is that rap. Do they have to be rapping over a break or breaks played by a DJ? I seem to remember hearing that a lot of rap tunes in like 79/90 were not the original breaks but were re-recorded by studio bands for copyright reasons. Wax On
I was of the understanding it was King Tim III but who fucking knows - i bet there's some real underground private press type ish which came before it in some city or another. Whilst we're on about the old school rap, if anyone hasn't got it, check this comp out http://lust4dust.blogspot.com/2010/01/third-unheard-connecticut-hip-hop-1979.html not sure if the archive is stable due to the comments, probably just some bozo who can't unzip it though.
