Where are you?

I'm in Paris. It's burning.

Yeah everyone's fighing the power over there, eh?

I don't know.

{Silence} Okay...so, you've got a new album and a single in responce to Hurricane Katrina.

Yeah, it's called "Hell No We Ain't Alright Either!"

So, you were watching CNN and thought "I have to say something"?

Was obvious.

You've said that rap music is the CNN of black people...

{Interrupting} I said that in 1988.

Well, what do you think rap's important for now?

It's a worldwide cultural experience for people under 40.

You're 45, where do you fit in?

I don't know.

Are you a Muslim?

I have no religion, but I have great respect for God.

In your latest album liner notes, you thank Allah.

Yeah, well...

So that's the most applicable name for God for you?

That works. Or God. Whatever.

Tell us about your relationship with the almighty..

You gotta.

Gotta what?

Have a relationship.

And it drives you to make music and write?

Yeah. I got a drive.

Five years ago, you were a big voice for broadband internet. What's the next technological advance your backing?

Um, iPod video.

You got one?

No.

You want one?

Yeah, I guess.

Your voice was used in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Are you a fan of the game?

Nah, I don't play games.

How did you end up in a game?

Some company.

Can you rate the four American presidents since you started Public Enemy?

I don't know. The Bushes would be the last two. No, Reagan last. I don't know.

You've been involved with partnership for a Drug-Free America and one of your own band members, Flava Flav, had crack problems. Was it hard watching him battle that?

Now he's a reality star; better he's addicted to fame than drugs. Society glorifies drugs. You probably do too.

Does beer count?

Yeah, it's all the same to me.

Then yes, I do.

Well, there you go.

Alot of rappers hang out together. Do you hang with the younger bucks on the scene?

I ran into Jay-Z twice in a week once, just on the street.

And when you see these people, do they tell you they started rapping because of your albums?

Uh-huh.

Do you think gangsta rap is a voice for disaffected people, or is it the reason they're disaffected?

It's too far out of balance.

What?

It's too far out of balance, yeah.

A by-product of gangsta rap is that people say "nigger" all the time now. Does the word still have the same sting?

It's a terrible word. Everybody's using it. I don't know what that means.

You wouldn't call a friend one?

No, it's only bad. It's not funny.

When was the last time a white guy said nigger around you?

Never happened.

Have you got a secret vice? Porn, cigars, white women?

No. What is this magazine?

Ralph.

What's that?

The closest US mag would be Maxim.

You sound like Maxim. We done?

Sure. Thanks for chatting with us. You're obviously under the weather and...

{Interripting} I ain't under the weather.

Erm, okay..well thanks for chatting anyway.

See you later {hangs up}.
