  1. Went last night - interesting venue under the arches. Think a few DVers/ex-DVers were there. Obviously Symatic as he was in the competition. P-Nuts was competing too.

Think I spied Prime Cuts at one point as well.

Good event, particularly as it was free. And I got to play around with a Rane 72 and a pair of Twelves so, yeah, happy days.

    Anyone else make it?

  2. For $500/£420 it looks great, although they really should include time-coded records with it. Soldering the line faders in is a bit meh too.

Ignoring the really cheap mixers that nobody really wants, it's weird that there's no middle ground with scratch DJ mixers. I mean, if there was a version of this that had mini-Innofaders for all 3 faders, with proper curve/reverse on all of them, I would pay an extra £100-£200 or so for that, but it seems like you either have to have a mixer with a decent crossfader only and basic/no curve/reverse controls, or you have to go for the super high end mixers that cost 3X as much as this or more.

Exactly what I was thinking. Also, bit odd to call it the Scratch and then not have those features on it.

  3. most first look impressions have been underwhelmed with the new 12's. my only hope is that this will help lower the price of used mk2-mk5 12's. :d

If the build quality is as cack as it sounds it'll certainly help lower the price of the mk7s!

  4.

would be sweet if they released the sl-700's :)

dj koko will be fuckin dope at that opening event tho

This is what my brain was thinking when they were mentioning the 7th and 7, and with that lineup of DJs.

I'd love a 7 or 10" technics to play with.

Saw Dj Koco play at DJ Muro's Birthday party when we were on honeymoon in Tokyo! Absolutely killer!

I think you may well be on to something - that makes a lot of sense!

It starts off all right and the earlier part of the list is fine but it tails off in the middle and by the end it's dross. So, bit like hip hop really.

  6. I've been out of the game for a while now. I just put my setup back together and realized that my shits a little dated. Im using m-audio torq for a dvs and that shit dosent run on windows 10. So if my old laptop takes a dump on me, i'm shit outta luck. And i just realized that my stanton sk-2f is like a vintage mixer now. So i've been considering getting a pioneer s3. upgraded mixer and it comes with serato dj. cant afford an s9 and i can use my mpk mini for midi triggers.

If you're not tied into Serato yet and looking at an s3-type mixer, you might want to try the djm250 mk2 - exactly the same mixer and a lot cheaper. Only real difference is it comes with Rekordbox DJ instead of Serato DJ.

  7. When its done well, it's great.

[Nerd Alert] Isn't it retrospective term, with the artists making RnB/Funk/Disco music some of which was later termed boogie?

Yes, I believe it was. I think the term originated in the UK to describe that type of black dance music coming out of the US in the early 80s. Disco was tainted by that point so people didn't want to describe it as that. Uk DJ Greg Wilson has an excellent history of it at this site: http://www.electrofunkroots.co.uk

  8. Most 80s boogie stuff leaves me a little cold TBH. I guess its the disco-ness of it all.

80s funk however I have so much time for!

Ok,so that's an interesting point - 80s funk and 80s boogie - different or the same?

I always saw boogie as the funkier end of disco but not sure I could make much of a distinction between that and some of the 80s funk stuff.

    80s boogie - Evelyn Champagne King, D-Train?

80s funk - Rick James, Cameo?

  9. I love some of the 80's funk stuff, from the time you're describing. I dunno if its classed as Boogie, but theres some dope tunes that have that "everybody has limitless cocaine credit" vibe to them.

I'm thinking Rick James, Luther Vandross, Teena Marie, Mtume, and this killer track:

def not bogie vibes though right?

"everybody has limitless cocaine credit" vibe - lol! That is exactly it!

That's the fonk in the 80s right there.

Most of it is a bit plastic sounding to me..but some of it I can listen too,my missus likes that sort of music a lot..I have to play stuff like this for her on a saturday night usually hehe but I eventually switch it up to more Funk based stuff like this.

This is much more my kinda thing though.

I like the Funk served raw, thanks.

  11. funny this topic came up since i was just digging thru my records looking for some funky stuff. I think boogie is almost a blend of disco and funk. but maybe more disco than funk.

Yeah, pretty much - it's a fusion of the two, I think. Not sure it's one more than the other - just depends on the record. But it's stuff aimed squarely at the dancefloor. When it's the funkier end, I really like it.
