    The music made me not want to try this.

    Well, that and the $1000+ projector cost.

    I'd have to start dressing differently if I did that too, there's that expense on top of everything.

    It would work well with Deee Lite albums though,

    Cool jazz is basically white guys trying to make jazz for old white guys. Cool jazz is jazzes' awkward white redheaded step child, so it's not a good thing to be classified.

    You're not getting cool jazz and smooth jazz confused a bit there are you?

     

     

     

    Nope, I'm not confusing the two, although there are similarities between the 2 subgenres.

     

    If not just for the sake of this discussion, for genuinely great education reasons please watch this short clip. This is definitely the best definition of cool jazz I have ever heard.

    If you don't want to watch the whole 3 minute clip, go to the 1:06 minute mark and listen to the author of the documentary's definition. If you disagreed with his assessment, I seriously would be very surprised.

    Jopa, no offense, I just disagree with you thats all. My definition of cool jazz was obviously a bit tounge and cheek, I realize as an Italian Angelo Badalamenti is a white guy. I also know that usually he's a composer and primarily known for his soundtracks. But it's definitely a Jazz composition, and since I completely agree with the video documentary above, (that definition of cool jazz) I'll stick with my story that it's not cool jazz.

     

    Barry Adamson is as close as I can get to that sound Vekked for a recommendation. I don't know if there is a lot of that kind of jazz prominantly out there any more. Twin Peaks made that sound more popular at a time when it was basically dead. Since that time I've heard music like that only a handful of times. If you do a bit of digging for post hard bop 1950s club jazz you may be able to find a few similar tunes, but it's probably not easy to dig up enough to put together a short compilation of that style. Let me know if you find more examples of that, I really like that style myself.

     

    I have a compilation from Blue Note called "Mostly Modal" which has some nicer laid back vibes like that, but it's primarily hard bop.

  3. Nowadays if you search for club jazz or modern club jazz you'll find a lot of Japanese artists. Seems like they have taken over the club jazz scene completely and have speed it up X10. Older club jazz was slower and more smokey sounding like Angelos. For similar sounds I would also check out Barry Adamson,

    ^He's got that slow smokey sound down to a T. I love that guy too, very diverse. Also check out Soil and Pimp Sessions (Japanese modern club jazz) for some much faster but sometimes equally haunting jazz sounds.

  4. Hopefully this is cool, but I'd like to recommend an enhancement... Any way you can have a pop up appear when a new PM is sent? I never seem to notice the subtle red flag in the upper left, I've gone days without even noticing I had a PM. I don't want an email reminder, just a pop up saying "you have a new PM".

     

    Other then that, I guess this place is perdnt ner perfect as far as functionality goes. Honestly I wish my forum had half the features this one does.

  5. First off good topic Steve, I often wondered myself.

     

    One thing you forgot was mailing hard copies out to people. Here's something that I do with all my mixes. I have a list of my own friends and family who get every mix I make in the mail. I do it because I love doing it, it's not about the money at all, it makes them happy so I'm happy. Plus friends and family are the best promoters by the way, my little brother in particular talks about my mixes with all his friends, so I get a lot of downloads from his friends and friends of friends. I also do it because mp3s are so plentiful, that often people think they are completely worthless regardless of where you post it, mp3s are less then a dime a dozen. There are literally thousands of mixes floating around and no one has time to download them because they are so cheap you can't even GIVE away free music any more no matter who you are or how good you are. BUT, if someone opens their mailbox and sees a CD sitting in there it becomes real, the hard work is instantly recognized and they feel obligated to listen to it. For me I see it like this... If they didn't listen to it, it would be like you painting them a picture and they didn't look at the picture, they just left it wrapped up. "Oh I'll look at the painting later when I have time." The mixes I ship out get listened to, relistened to and enjoyed.

     

    My mp3 uploads on the other hand (with a few exceptions like Dumpster Funk and Solar Powered Space Trees) never take off. It's not because they suck (I hope) it's because people don't wanna be bothered with free music from some dude out there. Sad but true, I see it even with HUGE names like DJ Premier.

     

    BTW: I noticed as DJForums has gotten back on it's feet that the mix submission forum is back to it's old self. I deposited my Beck mix there and before 3 hours went by it went to page 2 where no one looks. Certain forums you post it on won't get noticed. On the other hand, if you put it on my mixtape submission forum and it'll be on page one for years LOL.

    Don't know how many Beck fans are on here, but if you are, this mix should be right up your alley. Disc 1 is just the funky side of Beck Hanson. On the opposite disc (not uploaded) is Beck's opposite side, (country, folk music) reminds me a bit of a modern dylan the way he tells stories, thus the name.

     

    Anyway, not much to blabber about, hope you enjoy it. Hit me up w/ some words if you peep it.

    I think clicks and pops suck when they are overbearing only. Otherwise, if they don't detract from the song by becoming something hard that is to ignore, they are a nice constant reminder that you are listening to the "real thing". I'm a romantic when it comes to vinyl collecting so to me that just adds warm fuzzys when I hear it on a mix.

     

    I'd add, having clicks and pops for certain genres are more acceptable than others. It's great for a funk or blues mix, ok in small doses for a Hip Hop mix, but you don't want any of that when you are mixing up a straight up techno or electronic music mix. You don't wanna hear a big pop in a techno mix, since techno is supposed to sound futuristic, unorganic and crisp, beat up records detract from that greatly. I still buy an occasional techno album but never if it's in bad shape.

  8. The writer of that blog is a dumb ass and if I could send my fist through my computer screen all the way to San Fransico to punch his winey little face, I would do it.

    On his blog title he actually states that he wants to ban instrumental Hip Hop. Ban it? COME ON!

    He doesn't even know what it is, he referenced Diplo as an example for God's sake. What a pansy. I hate clueless fucks like that who blog about shit they know nothing of. What a genuine waste of bandwidth.

     

    Instrumental Hip Hop is just like any Hip Hop, it can be dope or it can be wack. It totally depends on how good the producer of the beat is. I got all kinds of instrumental albums that I bought because the beats were dope and the rappers sucked, or maybe the beats were just as dope as with the rapper, either way, there's plenty of room for that kind of boom bap in my collection. Not to mention all the sub-genres of Hip Hop that are purely instrumental that are worth rotating.

  9. 2ndHand used to use 2 sheets of glass and a couple of clamps, then leave it out in the sun. Same principle as this and it worked.

     

    I tried that a couple of times, maybe I didn't wait long enough before I brought it back in, or maybe it wasn't hot enough that summer day, or maybe not sunny enough, but it didn't help. The record still plays so no harm done but there is just so many factors that effect the glass in the sunlight or oven remedies. A whole lot of guesswork. The nice thing about this product is that they did all the research on how much weight, how long in the oven, what temp, and they factored in the various record weights. I'd buy it for that information alone. Hell 80 bucks isn't that bad considering what I'd be rescuing.

     

    It woulda been nice to see a before and after shot of that record on that video though, WTF.
