  1. you just bend the catch on the switch so that it can move into a third position, if i'm thinking of the right thing.
  2. the general philosophy around these, ie gathering around the turntables, maintaining a light yet controlled touch, and so on, is cool. the problem is, if ruck, who is a phenomenal scratcher, couldn't make the controller one sound like the future, then lending his hand to this, something he's been against for years, doesn't work either. fuck it i might as well say i invented it all, i swear it was me who ruminated on the cue point/midi possibilities of the first wave of midi capable decks and dvs systems. in fact i have a sloppy video somewhere of controlling ssl, before midi, with a keystroke converter to do some kind of melody routine. fuck it, i'm an originator. idiot.
  3. really nice, clean cuts, the main problem is your tendency to think very rigidly in terms of where a phrase starts and ends in a sequence of bars. it was always obvious where you were going to stop and start. that's me, always a critic.
  4. I scratch occasionally. I can go a couple of weeks without doing it, only to spend a couple of hours a day for a week at other times. I'm pretty sure I hit a peak and let it slip a while ago, but I think I've just about pulled back a timing issue I got into. I disappoint myself when I scratch usually, which puts me in a crappy mood. I never mix anymore, I deleted most of my pirate mp3s and never got any more and I've got piles of wax I don't listen to any more. It's sort of a shame, I miss it.
  5. I have gotten into indie computer (as opposed to console) games of late... to be honest largely because there are more free ones. I think XBLA/indie creators should be allowed to create freeware - it'd be a great way to get people to 'buy in' to indie gaming long term. I have bought a few indie games pretty much on a whim, and it's largely down to the feeling that the community is supported house of cards style, by accepting that by paying for one game you are indirectly supporting the whole ecosystem that breeds the creativity and inspiration for everything from the freeware to the guys who end up in major studios creating the diamonds in the rough of the 'hollywood' gaming industry. as far as free ones for pc (some for mac): cave story - free, absolutely stunning game. this is also available, with enhanced but still authentic graphics, for wii (for a price, if I recall) iji - great free game, with multiple narratives depending on your actions. machinarium - great point and click adventure, haven't finished yet still because i keep leaving it for too long and forgetting what i'm supposed to be doing, but it's charming and fun. there are quite a few more great ones - check indiegames.com and tigsource.com (especially their database db.tigsource.com) for some great links and editorials... as far as xbox goes, though, i bought (and hated) braid, keep meaning to but forgetting to set a tenner aside for castle crashers, and won one on 100 vs 1 (i did really well on that, i was one of 4 people that beat the one and got a game and 1600 ms points, or something!)... the name is on the tip of my tongue but i forget. it's the one where you guide a little alien blob round that eats stuff. it's really fun, although definitely something you play for 20 minutes from time to time rather than slog it out, as it gets torturously monotonous if you try and cram too much in.
  6. i love it, it pisses all over alan wake or lost planet 2 as well. i hope they can iron some of the glitches out as they go, but with everything else considered it's still one of the best games i've played on 360.
  7. Chris

    2 mpcs?

you just don't want the jjos because someone told you to get it and you're a cool rebel
  8. great stuff, really tight. i'm going to have to learn those flares where you work your way through the sample, they sound wicked...
  9. you can just get your money back if you want. you could also demand they replace it. unless you bought it as a business customer, in which case it's on akai, it's up to the shop to sort you out if it's broken.
  10. Is Searching a Zelda remix or not I still can't quite decide...
  11. oooh, let's be left wing ?
  12. hairy nipples do it for you too?
  13. maybe the other bloke will get hit by a car or something and I'll get another by... it's a bit embarrassing to lose your way to the semis but I'm not complaining, I'll try my best to make a DV final! Loop, well played on your file and thanks for bowing out :S
  14. i wonder why he's gone for 24s instead of 30s... 30s are the size you tend to see in arcades/on arcade sticks, 24 is more often the start button size. I'd be tempted to go for 30s, but I doubt it's going to be as good an experience as pads, more a fun project. Haven't got enough spare cash to give it a go at the moment though.
  15. life's too short, i might post a bit this month! or i might decide not to again tomorrow i've not decided yet. still, four day weekend coming up- boom
  16. I would definitely take a look at Live Intro- but as Dirk says download the demo (and if you register, you get the full version for a month too) to see whether you like it... then take a look at any controllers on the market are offering Live Lite, which differs depending on the hardware it's distributed with but could be worth as much as Intro to you with the controller from a value perspective, if you know what I mean. For instance, a Novation Remote SL is a fantastic controller and has a very well featured version of Live Lite. Akai MPKs also have a very good version of Live Lite- I imagine, although couldn't tell you for sure, that the new MPD26 will come with the latest Live Lite licence too. Aside from that train of thought, you could perhaps look at a DAW such as Reaper, which is very, very cheap but offers a very similar workflow- and same plugin capability- as its 'pro' competitors. Lite Lite/Intro has restrictions as to what you can do, but Reaper, or Musys, or a couple of others (that I'm not particularly au fait with and couldn't legitimately recommend) do not. Another option is to go hardware. MPC/MV or Fantom/Motif/Triton could be an option for you. You don't need to worry about whether what you've 'got' computer wise can handle your intentions, and it could make a big difference maintaining the difference between your computer and your music making stuff. It's tough for me to make that recommendation- I've been doiing this music making stuff for about 13 years now and a lot of what I know is through the avenues that computer based music making afforded me... but at the same time, a lot of my best stuff or most fun moments have been through using completely non computer related stuff. It's tricky, and maybe there is an element of paying your dues- who knows! Honestly, my advice is to get an MPC1000 and the JJOS. I'm basing that on you wanting an MPD, and thus not caring about a keyboard but wanting to chop and play with samples. You'll have much, much more fun with an MPC for this stuff. The other option might be Maschine, but honestly I've got one of those on the desk myself and as nice as it is, I still wish I had a 2500 again. Maybe it's the benefit of the amount of stuff that I've seen come and go, I don't know...
  17. Go on then, I've just signed up as Garvin Maye...
  18. You will either have to increase your buffer size or sort out any other processes which cause spikes- your sample rate is being crippled as your computer can't handle things... Reducing your sample rate is a way to improve performance without increasing buffer size (which increases latency) Hope this helps!!
