  1. Heres the deal, I've been using M447s for years and love the fact they don't skip, but I'm just a bit fed up with the crunchy highs i get through them when just listening to albums etc (which to be honest I tend to do more than scratching nowadays anyway)

Can anyone recommend a decent, cheap (under £30 if poss) hifi cartridge that will give me a marked improvement on my (albeit with slightly knackered styli) 447? I only use one deck nowadays anyway and won't be backcueing or scratching on them so tracking and durability won't be much of an issue (will still use my 447s when i wanna cut). Standard mount for pdx2300.

    Cheers guys

  2. 3. Stick a Pro X in my current mixer (Ecler Hak 310)

Sticking a P&G in my 02 was almost as good as buying a new mixer -and cost me £30 shipped. Mind you, I was 100% happy with my mixer before that, so things might be different for you.

I say go with the fader option anyway, if only because it'll give you time to weigh things up and look out for a real bargain. Let's face it, if you're anything like me then you're going to end up married to your next mixer purchase for at least half a decade, so you might as well pick a good 'un. Plus, when you do, you'll have a decent fader in your 310 to take elsewhere or use as a second mixer when a mate comes over for a cut.

Mind you, no effects loop on the 310, is there? Hardly essential, I know, but in this day and age even the onboard sound on my reasonably mature laptop can do decent effects processing, so it could be worth having this.

What shape is your 310 in? If you do choose to part company with it, give me a shout. I can't pay top dollar, but I'm not a nigerean scammer either... my new flatmate wants to learn to cut, some Q&A'ing is in order I reckon.

I reckon Giz should sell you that 02; it's a bitch move alright but he did clearly say UK only and you're a mate... ;)

EDIT: the more I think about this; the more I want your old 310 -although for different reasons. I've been thinking about building a hardware effects box from scratch for a while now, and I've also been looking for a cheap source of phono preamps to run DJdecks with... mind you, there's so much space inside the 310 that I could probabbly internalise some hardware EFX on the master bus, tap the amplified phono output and stick something like a MAYA44 inside there, leave a USB lead trailing... all still in the pipe-dream stage of course but it's definately given me the hardware-hack boner alright.

Resolution: start working on all this stuff -and document it. Need a decent digicam really (and a macrolens -I smell a hack within a hack)

I've done this to my xs-4 in part liam; I soldered some connectors from my phono stages and created extra outputs on the front panel for use with djdecks

now i plug deck>phono in, amplified phono out>maya 44 ins, maya 44 outs>line in on mixer and it works great - no preamps needed (obviously), and to switch from vinyl control to real vinyl i just use the phono/line switch on the xs-4 without the need for splitters or anything, total cost, about £1.50

ought to write this up on the djdecks forum realy, veryt simple but very effective and it means i can use my maya 44 for other things also

  3. i just wonder - if you've taken grade 8 then surely you have at least grade 5 theory

"diffrence between a G sharp and an A flat... ...something like 1/14th of a quaver or something"

"his strings out of tune by a 1/8th of a semi quaver !"

a quaver is a rhythmic measure, in no way related to tuning or pitch

there is no way anyone can be grade 8 and not know that

  4. i think the problem is that the sound guy needs a seperate feed of the mpc and the scratching so he can balance them individually in the mix - otherwise he could just send the headphones out to the drummer and the master out to the mixer

volume pedal would probably have 6.3mm stereo jack in and 6.3mm stereo jack out, if you got a couple of these:

you should be in business (although 6.3mm jack would probably be a preferable connector from the sound guys poinit of view and iirc mpc outputs are 6.3 jacks already)

  5. Bear in mind a Floyd-rose type trem is more difficult to change strings with, more fiddly to setup (ie. if you decide to change string guage [thickness] or string height etc) and is also difficult if you like to change tunings regularly. eg. Standard to drop D for different RATM songs.

FUCK A FLOYD ROSE! Worst pick up design ever. IMO

err, a floyd rose isnt a pickup... :)

i wouldn't ever want one though, far too fiddly for whatever (crap stuff) i want to play

  6. since when was music about being correct? as with all creative forms it's feeling and opinion based - what im saying is that (imo, and im sure many others') satriani's contribution to music on the long scale is not as significant as many others

it's cool if satriani's music does something for you, it just doesnt for me

  7. exactly, music manufacturers, so they're going to choose highly endorsed people to help them sell more guitars/keyboards etc

im not disputing his abilities as a guitarist, but i'd consider someone like eric clapton a much better musician

i use my ears, not crappy magazines, to make my mind up/learn about music
