Combined Beat AND Scratch Battle - win a C&P test press!

Firstly, the regular sample flip beat battles aren't going anywhere, just taking one month(ish) off so we can do something scratch related for a change. It's about time and Ovrkil asked so...

Here's the plan.

All beat makers now have three weeks to submit an original scratch beat they've made, of about two minutes in length give or take for musical measures (nobody wants 13 and half bars of anything!). You can use any sounds, instruments or samples you like.

It can be any style you like and there are no real rules apart from length. Except remember it's meant to be a scratch beat, so leave a bit of sonic space for cuts ideally. For once this is more about the producer/beat maker trying to make somebody else look good, rather than just themselves. Although the end form is often simpler, making a beat that actually inspires a DJ to cut can be much harder than just making a dope standalone beat.

After three weeks, the beat battle closes and all submitted beats will be made available for dowload. This will form the start of the scratch battle - DJs will have two weeks to listen to and/or download the submitted beats and make and submit a freestyle scratch video using their favourite beat. Then we'll have a public vote on these for a week just like any normal scratch battle.

The winner of the scratch battle will also include the winner of the beat battle by default. Essentially the winner of the beat battle is the person who made the beat that inspired the scratch freestyle.

No prizes of course, just for fun and a chance to make your chest swell and your family feel proud of you

EDIT: the winning beat maker and scratcher will each win a test pressing from the best scratch wax label in the galaxy, Cut & Paste Records. Unless they are the same person, in which case they will win two test pressings (and will basically be Highlander to boot)

Any questions? Ask here and I'll make up an answer... I am winging this, but I have a pretty clear idea of what I'm on about even if I'm not explaining it very well!

Also, tell your friends - the more entries the better for both parts of this battle.

Dope idea rockwell!

CNP wanna offer some more inscentive (beyond the respect and admiration of the sacred elders of DV :) )

The winner of each battle will receive a Cut & Paste Records mystery test press - possibly of Improvise Wisely or 7 Steps Of Alchemy.... but depending on the date we finish it might be something even newer and excitinger.

Thanks.

I thought I'd switch it up a bit from the previous format of picking a winning beat and making everyone cut to it... DJs like a bit of choice and personally I felt sometimes the winning beat wasn't the best beat for cutting to or the people voting in the beat battle weren't the same ones who were entering the cut battle. We could just pick a looper, but they already exist, so at least this way we're creating more content.

Dope beat, Rock.

I did think about giving this a bash myself and submitting something beatwise but I started and then totally forgot what I was doing and ended up on a prog jazz fusion type excursion via some Sun Ra and 'Space Ritual' era Hawkwind samples,a combination which probably isn't the best idea for a scratch break unfortunately... :|
