Portable scratching setup? (lazyweb)

Recommended Posts

I need to tell my girlfriend what I want for Christmas. At the moment I'm at risk of her buying me a yoghurt maker - why she thinks I want one is beyond me.

So anyway, I've seen videos of all you cool cats cutting on 7in portable turntables and I want in. Judging by previous threads in this section, it looks like I should be getting a Numark PT01? But what about the other bits? Can you guys point me in the direction of the following recommend parts:

* Turntable (PT01?)?

* Fader?

* Decent 7" scratch records?

* Do I need a speaker? MiniRig maybe?

* How do you mix the turntable with the beat?

Thanks guys!!!

Lol... good luck in getting her to hook you up with this stuff but here is a slight breakdown.....

Turntable : Numark PT01/ION, Vestax Handy Trax

Fader: Raiden Fader, Frisk Fader

7" Scratch Records: Lots on the market right now, a few threads on here about different recs

Speakers: Any little portable or large speaker with a 3.5"(Aux) input

Beats: Any beat of a phone or tablet, theres a few apps out there like tablebeats & thudrumble

Theres a ton of threads in this section about the whole portable game.

Easy mate,

Yeah, I got the PT-01 last week and I love it. So far I've got the Cut & Paste 7" and Ritchie Ruftone's 7" - both are def. recommended. I'm using a Raiden fader and I've got it housed in an awesome Fader crib (not sure why that's coming up in $s - could be my Firefox that's at fault). I'm running beats off my iPhone (there's a line-in on the Raiden) and using headphones, but obviously speakers would be grand also. That aside, all you need is a slip mat. There are Dr Suzuki ones or Battle Ave ones which are 7"-ready, otherwise just trim one down that you have already

Did you tell her you already have one and it doesn't get enough use. Hint hint.

Vestax handytrax / PT-01 (and its ion branded version) both have +/-10% pitch control. you can actually get slower speeds by positioning the 33/45 switch just right, or you can get Focus' new +/-100% pitch range if you wanna go big :)

the raiden fader allows you to mix your cuts with a beat played off a phone or whatever.

theres a bunch of 7" scratch records including ours, get em while theyre hot:

For beats there is the Tablebeats app, you can just hook up your phone to the speakers and start cutting. I'm thinking about getting a Numark PT01 Scratch with the Jesse Dean fader myself. Texas Scratch League makes really dope 7 inch scratch records, but they sell out fast, so you gotta be quick to get one.

Theres some good info on portablism gear and modding options here: http://djlab.net/2017/03/21/portablism-gear-guide/

Anyone have any experience with the Stokyo Kutter? How does it compare to raiden?

I've actully owned both and the Stokyo Kutter is vastly better. It is reversible and also you can make the beat/line in either bypass the fader or be the second channel. Both faders are still going to have a little "pop" because the fader's aren't powered but the Kutter is phenominal. Very sharp and much better than the Raiden.
