Audio interface question

Recommended Posts

Im looking for an Audio Interface for recording / multitracking mixes. Also looking for one that can be used with ableton for live looping off of turntables. I would like some suggestions for audio interfaces fire wire or usb for under $200. I have this one in mind that went on sale but im not sure how it would work/ sound. Im currently just using my built in macbooks sound card which doesn't cut it.

This is what I have in mind so far

It seems like it would work fine for what I would want to use it for. Let me know what you think and if you have any other suggestions.

I started to answer earlier, but I am likely not the person to ask...

but I was going to say something like this:

This is what Klever said he uses:

If you wanna go budget, maybe the Numark DJ I/O ($99)... it's supposed to be good for live PA/DJing with Ableton, but don't think it has a good input.

The Alesis lo2 USB might be another cheaper option-- under $150 USD.

Also maybe try asking on this forum: http://abletonatx.ning.com/

At first I thought that was just the Final Scratch interface, but I get it now. Seems pretty legit for the price. I kinda prefer 1/4" plugs, but wouldn't be a dealbreaker for me to have rca like that Stanton does... looks pretty good for under a bill!

How many in/out do you need for what you are wanting to do??

i really just need one in and one out. I really wanted some rca outs for hooking up loopers when practicing scratches. You think I will be able to use the ins where the turntables would go as well? Another thing if I am able to use the ins on the turntables to record wouldnt I be able to record one turntable for one one track and another on another track?

Reason I ask is I was thinking of getting a cheapish interface... looking at these three:

One thing I wondered is if the headphone jack gives any amplification... I just got some pretty nice headphones but the bass is detailed but kinda sad but I heard even a little amplification really improves em.

Edit: also wanted to c if I can set up all of those to cue from headphone jack or just with the numark. The numark looks most dummy proof but the Stanton u got looks the best deal.

Firebox FTW

I have a whole Presonus setup (FP10 aka Firepod,Eureka Pre and Central Station) and i must say,i really like the build and quality of Presonus's products. Their technical support team is great and have always answered my emails inna reasonable amount of time! Although,i realized you said USB....if you can do firewire,do this!

The firebox does look really nice. I went with the stanton b/c of the price, but I am gonna keep the firebox in mind when I eventually upgrade.

BTW-- Stanton FS Open (the interface I bought) does not have supported drivers for Mac Intel Core 2 Duo computers! What a fucking shame. It is really well designed IMO. Really ridiculous this doesn't work.. I should have known better... I abandoned FS2 in favor of Serato because of shit like this.

Nice pig.

I have never used it BUT... I bought the Audio 2 DJ and that is what shitted on me in that laptop battle and made me look like a fucking tard. Everytime I've played out since then I used to PreSonus Firebox that somebody (kutclass?) recommended and it's dope.

Cheers dirk, not one single one of them on eBay though and it's a fair whack more than the NI one. Also the Firebox requires me to but some RCA to 1/4" leads and I'm a notorious tight northern bastard. Apparently it was FlipFlop who recommended it to you (cf. earlier in this post). Finally the ProSonus comes with Cubase LE (or whatever the lite version is called) which I can't see me using whereas with Traktor there's a 10-12% chance I will.

What went wrong with the NI unit exactly, did a channel just die? Also what gigs you been playing recently, I'll have to pop down to one.

Just had a handful of random ones... strangely I have a DJ thing next week--fundraiser with 8 other DJs (I'm going to spin all 80s/90s 45s), MPC Club next month and a pretty big dance party next month... all fairly unusual for me to play that many times in just over a month.

What went wrong is the bass output died and my whole set had a lot of low so it was total shit. Also I though the output was kinda weak. To be fair, it could have been the line mixer these dweebs plugged me into or the retard on the sound board... but I've not used it since and things have sounded great. So, who knows.... I'm sure it's fine--buy it and sell it if it sux.

I'll vouch for NI. If you get an Audio 4, you can upgrade to Traktor Scratch Duo if you want (or, heaven forbid, get a dodgy version of the software and a couple of timecode records... you don't get the cool cables or the nice bag or anything though... in general it's not the best way to save a couple of quid) and integrate it with your vinyl setup. Look at import prices too - you can get real bargains. If you're lucky you might be able to get a really good deal on Traktor Scratch Pro if you ring someone like Westend DJ too...

What about the Audio Kontrol 1? That seems pretty cool. Side note--i also wish the ni gear was metal not cheap plastic. Anyways, i'll have to give my Audio 2 another try if the sac man says their gear is good.

I use an NI Audio 2 for all our live sets and it's wonderful, so small and compact and does the job perfectly. Also generally NI's stuff is made of metal and very well built (I've yet to see any midi controller with the quality of my Kore2 Controller), the Audio 2 however is plastic and I think the reason is that it is just the most entry level interface the make but because it's so light even if you drop it its not going to break or anything.

Very very odd that all your bass was missing though, can't quite work that one out tbh.

U ever get that Audio 4? I need to either buy or rent an interface ASAP. Trying to decide between an Apogee Duet (super pricy tho), Audio 4 (or 2) or Kontrol 1....

Yeah I got the Audio 4 that came with Traktor Dirk. It works fine with Traktor, little bit of lag but that could be a number of things, namely my non-love of DVS.

TBH I ain't used it as a classic "hifi-PC" interface yet. I can test it out tonite and let you know?
