How to add Facebook events to your calendar in Windows 8/8.1

I don't use many Metro apps in Windows 8.1, but I do like the live tiles: -

Much like with Android widgets, the live tiles are a way to see certain info at a glance.

In Windows 8 and 8.1 you can connect accounts, so, for instance, you can connect your Facebook and Twitter accounts. When you do that, certain info will be pulled into apps automatically, for example, you can see the notification about Panda accepting my friend request on Facebook on the lower tile in the screenshot above.

If you connect a Facebook account, your friends' birthdays will appear on the calendar by default, but Facebook events will not. If you want to add Facebook events, here's how to do it: -

1. Go to your list of events, here: -

If you don't want event invites to show up on your calendar, then click on the cog, top-right, and choose "Settings": -

Then check the box next to "Hide invites from iCal export" and hit "Save": -

2. Click the cog, top-right, and choose "Export": -

3. This window will pop up: -

Right-click on "upcoming events" and copy the link.

4. Go here and log in with your Microsoft account (depending on your security settings and the account you're logged into in Windows, it may log you in automatically): -

5. Click on "Import" at the top of the screen: -

6. Click "Subscribe": -

7. On the next screen, paste the URL you copied in step 3 into the "Calendar URL" field. Give the calendar a name ("Facebook Events" being the obvious choice), then choose a colour that events will display in and if you want to, choose a charm, then hit "Subscribe".

8. To instantly see the results, open the Calendar app in Windows 8/8.1, right-click anywhere on the screen and click on "Sync" in the lower-left corner. You don't have to do this as the calendar will update itself, but this is just a way to check that it's worked.

You'll now see Facebook events in your calendar app: -
