Soldering Iron

These cheap shitty ones are fine for starting out - http://cpc.farnell.com/duratool/d01847-40/iron-soldering-40w/dp/SD01126

Get some bevel tips for it though, they transfer heat much better - http://cpc.farnell.com/duratool/79-2130/tip-soldering-bevel/dp/SD01130

Also get a wee stand for it - http://cpc.farnell.com/duratool/d01853/soldering-iron-stand/dp/SD01706

I second the idea of getting a cheap one. I got by on on a radioshack iron and a solder sucker (for desoldering) for years. I just recently got a hakko setup and it's way better but it was expensive.

The other thing I'll say is PRACTICE on crappy stuff you don't care about before jumping in an trying on things you care about.

I tend to recommend a gas iron as a first, they are a bit expensive though, but reason i recommend those is that they are a shit hot kit bag tool, if you ever do any live set ups.

But yeah the cheap Antex did me for a while until i got a station (im shit at soldering, the station helped a bit)

I think that .31 is standard for most PCB work. Indium and Kester make very good solder. Try to get a cheap iron specifically for electronics to make sure the temp is right. FYI, 650 degrees Fahrenheit is the most widely used soldering temp but cheaper irons are usually not temp adjustable. Sorry, all this probably doesn't translate that well if you're not in the U.S.
