How to slipsteam updates into a Windows 7 installation disc

What is slipstreaming?

It's always a good idea to keep any OS up to date, so if you were doing a fresh install of Windows 7 you would usually install it from the disc and then you'd run Windows Updates and install Service Pack 1 and at least all of the critical updates released since then. Slipstreaming allows you to integrate updates so that when you install Windows from a DVD, all of the updates are installed at the same time so once the installation is complete, Windows will be fully up to date. It also has the advantage of saving you some hard drive space.

Downloading Windows 7 with SP1 already integrated

You can use your own Windows 7 disc and integrate Service Pack 1 into it, but if you do this then Windows will still create a 500 MB+ uninstall folder for the service pack when you install Windows. IMO, you're better off using one of the ISOs below as then you can slipstream updates into it without the large uninstall folder being created on install.

Here are some Windows 7 ISOs that already have Service Pack 1 integrated into them. The following links are to ISOs hosted by Digital River who is Microsoft's official partner for distribution of online products. These links are legit, so you will of course still need your license key in order to be able to register Windows once it's installed. All of these ISOs are English only.

Downloading updates released since Service Pack 1

The easiest way to do this is to use a free program called Windows Updates Downloader. You can download it here: -

Install it and then download the update list that relates to your version of Windows: -

Double-click the update list file to install it and you're good to go. You can now fire up Windows Updates Downloader and it will give you a list of all updates released since SP1. Check off the ones you want - I recommend checking off all critical and important updates at the very least - then hit the Download button and the updates will download.

Slipstreaming updates into the Windows 7 SP1 ISO

You can do this with a free program called RT Se7en Lite: -

Once installed, fire it up and hit the Browse button and choose "Select ISO file". You now have to select your ISO and select a folder where the ISO will be extracted (create a new, empty folder somewhere for this). Once the ISO has extracted you'll be asked which version of Windows 7 you're working with, so select the appropriate version and hit OK. The application will do its thing for a few minutes as it analyses the extracted files.

Now click on the Task button on the left-hand side and check the boxes next to the following items: -

Integration

ISO-Bootable

Next, click on the Integration button on the left-hand side, select the Updates tab and hit the Add button. Browse to where you downloaded all of the Windows updates and select them all, then hit the Apply button.

Click the ISO-Bootable button on the left-hand side, select "Build current image only", set the priority to High in the drop-down list on the right (assuming you want the process to complete as quickly as possible), then click the Commit button. RT Se7en Lite will now begin integrating all of the updates you selected which can take some time.

The last step is to create an ISO that you can burn. Click on the ISO-Bootable button on the left-hand side, select "Create image" from the drop-down list at the top, then click the Make ISO button.

For burning, I would recommend using ImgBurn which is available free here: -
